Job Description

Meals on Wheels People is a distinguished non-profit organization founded by and rooted in the Portland Metro community. For over 50 years, this organization has been a vital resource for older adults in the region, helping thousands maintain their independence through the critical services of weekly meal delivery and social connection programs. Meals on Wheels People operate more than 20 meal delivery centers spread throughout Multnomah, Washington, and Clark counties. The collective efforts of their dedicated staff and thousands of volunteers ensure that adults over 60 do not go hungry or suffer from social isolation, fulfilling a fundamental need in the community.

The culture of Meals on Wheels People is deeply grounded in its core values of integrity, commitment, respect, inclusion, creativity, and teamwork. These guiding principles shape a supportive and collaborative environment where every team member's well-being is valued and nurtured. Employees benefit from a work schedule that promotes balance, including a four-day workweek and generous quality time off. Beyond this, the organization provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k) retirement plan, pet insurance, a wellness program, and professional development opportunities. Additional support mechanisms such as an Employee Assistance Program and mileage reimbursement are also offered, emphasizing the organization's commitment to its workforce.

The Warehouse & Distribution Assistant role at Meals on Wheels People is an integral part of the organization's mission, focusing on the safe and timely distribution of prepared and unprepared food products, beverages, and supplies to the various dining sites. The assistant contributes significantly to warehouse operations by receiving, inspecting, and organizing vendor deliveries, meticulously recording inventory and temperature levels, and preparing products for efficient and accurate delivery. This includes guaranteeing proper labeling and sealing of shipments and adhering to stringent food safety and sanitation standards governed by state and federal laws.

Additional responsibilities extend into assisting with food production and packaging, maintaining cleanliness of equipment and space, and ensuring security in warehouse activities. The role requires a balance of physical activity and technical skills, including using electric pallet jacks, hand trucks, and lift gates, and maintaining computerized records for inventory tracking. The successful candidate will work within a team-oriented environment that emphasizes communication, careful attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols. This position not only supports the core operational aspects of meal delivery but also directly impacts the lives of seniors in the community by ensuring dependable access to nutritious meals and companionship through social connection programs.
