Job Description
Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph is a well-established nonprofit organization with deep historical roots dating back to 1879 when Father Bernard Donnelly founded Mount St. Bernard's Orphanage in Kansas City. This humble beginning sparked a lasting tradition of compassionate care and social service that has grown to serve an extensive region, including the Kansas City metro area and St. Joseph, Missouri, as well as a 27-county area. Catholic Charities is committed to empowering individuals and families at risk to overcome poverty by addressing immediate crises, creating stability, and providing comprehensive support to foster dignity and self-reliance. The organization is driven by a mission to help people move to a better life through hope-filled care, services, and advocacy, while uniting those of goodwill to join in this effort. Its vision emphasizes building communities united as one human family, lifting people toward self-sufficiency, and encouraging collective support. The core values of Catholic Charities include hope/faith, trust, commitment, and collaboration, which permeate all aspects of its work.
The Volunteer Engagement Manager role is a full-time, non-exempt position based out of the Kansas City office, with a 38-hour workweek primarily conducted on-site but inclusive of community-based outreach initiatives. This position pays $26.57 per hour, equivalent to an annual salary of approximately $52,500. This role reports to the HR & Volunteer Manager and operates within the Volunteer Services program. Office hours run Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with Fridays off, though the role occasionally requires evening and weekend work to support volunteer engagement activities and community events. The role offers the potential benefit of frequent three-day weekends.
As the steward of Catholic Charities' volunteer program, the Volunteer Engagement Manager is charged with the comprehensive oversight of volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, retention, and recognition. This includes working closely with agency leadership and program staff to identify meaningful volunteer opportunities that align with the organization's mission and goals. Acting as a key ambassador, the manager cultivates relationships with parishes, schools, corporations, community organizations, and individual volunteers, expanding volunteer participation and fostering community support. Essential duties include developing strategic outreach initiatives to recruit diverse volunteers, coordinating group volunteer activities, supervising lead volunteers, and managing volunteer records using specialized management software such as Volgistics.
This role also entails significant community engagement responsibilities, including delivering presentations, building partnerships, supporting parish advocates, and representing Catholic Charities at various events. Internally, the manager collaborates with program leaders to seamlessly integrate volunteers into programs and advises staff on best volunteer engagement practices. The position requires a solution-focused approach to addressing volunteer and staff concerns and leadership in organizing volunteer recognition efforts.
The Volunteer Engagement Manager embodies the organization’s values, demonstrating professionalism, inclusivity, respect for diversity, and a positive attitude. This role supports the larger mission of Catholic Charities by fostering strong volunteer networks that empower those in need, ensuring volunteers feel valued and engaged, and advancing community awareness and participation in the agency’s programs and services. Comprehensive benefits accompany this position, supporting a balanced, fulfilling career dedicated to meaningful social service.
