Job Description

Midwest Food Bank (MFB) is a prominent faith-based nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating hunger and malnutrition while providing disaster relief across the United States and internationally. With an annual operating budget of $20 million and assets totaling $95 million, MFB distributes over $548 million in food and disaster relief supplies annually through 10 divisions in the U.S. and two international operations. Serving 2,400 partner agencies, MFB approaches its mission with a commitment to excellence, focusing on both physical and spiritual nourishment. The organization’s foundation is rooted in Christian faith, aiming to share the love of Christ through its work, which nurtures not only the body but also the soul of those in need.

As a Volunteer Coordinator at Midwest Food Bank, you will become the heart behind the hands that help transform lives. This role is integral to the success of MFB’s mission, as it involves connecting passionate volunteers to meaningful volunteer service, thereby supporting the division’s operations and the broader organizational goals. Starting at a salary of $46,500 per year, this full-time role offers a compelling opportunity for individuals passionate about people and purpose-driven work to make a difference in their communities while engaging in fulfilling service.

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the entire volunteer program at the division level. Your role will encompass recruiting volunteers through community outreach, crafting engaging and fun volunteer environments, scheduling and placing volunteers in roles that best fit their skills and interests, and leading volunteer groups. You will foster a positive, safe, and welcoming atmosphere where volunteers feel valued and motivated to contribute. A significant part of the role also involves identifying and training lead volunteers who can host groups and represent the Midwest Food Bank's brand with professionalism and enthusiasm.

Beyond recruitment and scheduling, you will nurture volunteer morale through encouragement, mentoring, and ongoing training, ensuring volunteers experience personal growth and fulfillment. You will collaborate closely with various operational departments, including warehousing and agency relations, to ensure that volunteer efforts align seamlessly with division needs, especially in support of loadout processes and other critical tasks.

In addition to daily volunteer management, you will be tasked with organizing formal volunteer appreciation events annually, reinforcing the culture of gratitude and recognition that is essential to volunteer retention. You will also provide general office support and assist with bookkeeping functions when necessary, contributing to administrative efficiency.

This role requires a dynamic individual who models MFB's core values: serving those in need, empowering volunteers, embracing communities, working with integrity, and executing teamwork effectively. You will help cultivate a Christ-centered culture by building positive relationships with volunteers, staff, partner agencies, and community stakeholders. Compliance with all organizational policies and relevant laws is essential to ensure ethical and professional operations.

Midwest Food Bank values leadership that can influence and inspire. As such, this position also involves networking with peers locally and nationally to exchange best practices and strengthen the volunteer program across the organization's divisions. The Volunteer Coordinator role is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills to thrive in an environment that makes a lasting impact on lives every day.

If you are driven to build community, empower volunteers, and make a tangible difference while working with a faith-based organization that emphasizes both spiritual and physical nourishment, Midwest Food Bank offers a meaningful and rewarding career path. The role also comes with a competitive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, and life insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and flexible scheduling, supporting your well-being as you support theirs.
