Job Description

Operation Freedom Paws is a distinguished nonprofit organization based in San Martin, California, committed to saving lives at both ends of the leash. The organization focuses on enhancing the lives of veterans, first responders, and individuals with disabilities by connecting them with specially trained service dogs. Through a compassionate and mission-driven approach, Operation Freedom Paws fosters independence, confidence, and hope in its clients, making a significant impact on the community. Beyond its life-changing work with service dogs, the organization prioritizes meaningful community engagement and volunteer involvement to advance its mission and expand its reach.

The Volunteer & Events Coordinator plays a pivotal role within Operation Freedom Paws, reporting directly to the Director of Development & Marketing. This position offers a work schedule of 32 to 40 hours per week, with some evenings and weekends required to accommodate events. The role is stationed in-person at the organization's office located in San Martin, CA. The primary responsibility of this role is to manage a robust and engaged volunteer program while also spearheading the planning and coordination of impactful fundraising and community events. These events play a crucial role in driving both revenue and awareness for Operation Freedom Paws, while also strengthening community connections. The Volunteer & Events Coordinator is essential in ensuring that volunteers are meticulously recruited, thoroughly trained, and continuously supported throughout their volunteering journey.

This role demands a dynamic individual who thrives in a fast-paced nonprofit environment, blending strong organizational and communication skills with a passion for service. Key tasks include leading volunteer recruitment efforts, managing the entire volunteer lifecycle from applications and screening to onboarding and placement, and fostering a positive, mission-driven volunteer experience. The coordinator acts as the principal point of contact for all volunteer interactions, facilitating regular communications through emails and newsletters to maintain engagement and retention. The role extends to coordinating various volunteer programs such as corporate volunteer groups, gardening clubs, and youth board activities, ensuring volunteer needs are met throughout organizational programs and events.

In addition to volunteer management, the Volunteer & Events Coordinator oversees the successful execution of all fundraising and community events hosted by Operation Freedom Paws. This includes large-scale signature events like golf tournaments and wine galas, as well as smaller gatherings that foster community involvement. Responsibilities encompass venue research, vendor coordination, solicitation and management of in-kind donations, event logistics, decor setup and breakdown, attendee registration, and on-site event management to guarantee smooth operations. Collaboration is key, as the coordinator works closely with the Director of Development & Marketing and other staff members to align event strategies with fundraising goals.

This role also covers various general responsibilities such as providing administrative support, maintaining detailed volunteer records, and representing Operation Freedom Paws professionally at events and volunteer activities. Candidates should demonstrate organizational dexterity, excellent communication skills, and an ability to multitask efficiently within a small but dedicated team. A deep commitment to the nonprofit’s mission and the populations it serves is essential. The Volunteer & Events Coordinator position offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to a meaningful cause while gaining valuable experience in nonprofit volunteer management and event planning.
