Job Description
Operation Freedom Paws is a nonprofit organization dedicated to "saving lives at both ends of the leash" by training service dogs for veterans, first responders, and individuals with disabilities. Located in San Martin, California, this well-established nonprofit has a strong community presence and is committed to making a significant impact through its work. The organization thrives on a mission-driven approach and relies heavily on volunteer support and fundraising events to drive its vision forward. Working with a team that values compassion, dedication, and community connection, Operation Freedom Paws plays a critical role in enhancing the quality of life for those who serve and protect, as well as for those facing physical challenges.
The Volunteer & Events Coordinator position supports this vital mission by managing a comprehensive volunteer program and coordinating impactful fundraising and community events. This role operates under the supervision of the Director of Development & Marketing and requires a 32–40 hour per week commitment at the organization’s office in San Martin, CA. While the position is primarily office-based, some evenings and weekends are necessary to support event execution. The coordinator plays a key role in recruiting, training, and maintaining a motivated volunteer base that is mission-aligned and actively contributing. In addition, this person will help plan and support a variety of events such as golf tournaments, wine galas, and community outreach gatherings that raise revenue, increase awareness, and foster strong community bonds.
As the hub of volunteer coordination, this position entails managing all stages of volunteer engagement—from initial recruitment and screening to orientation, scheduling, ongoing communication, and retention efforts. The coordinator ensures volunteers have a positive, rewarding experience that encourages their long-term involvement. This includes working with specialized groups such as corporate volunteer teams, gardening clubs, and youth boards. Additionally, the coordinator must maintain accurate volunteer records and measure engagement through key metrics to inform ongoing program improvements.
On the events side, the Volunteer & Events Coordinator assists with all operational aspects of fundraising and community events. Responsibilities include researching venues, collaborating with vendors, soliciting in-kind donations, managing auction and raffle items, overseeing event logistics and timelines, and handling attendee registration. This role also involves hands-on support during events by managing setup, breakdown, décor, and guest experiences to ensure each event runs smoothly and achieves its goals.
Collaboration is central to success in this role, requiring close coordination with the Director of Development & Marketing, staff members, volunteers, and community partners. The Volunteer & Events Coordinator also undertakes various administrative tasks such as data entry, reporting, and general coordination to support the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the development and marketing efforts. A passion for the mission of Operation Freedom Paws and a commitment to excellence are essential qualities for candidates seeking this rewarding opportunity to make a direct impact in the lives of veterans, first responders, and individuals with disabilities.
