BluePearl is currently seeking an extraordinary Oncology Veterinary Technician to join their Nashville team. This role is ideal for a passionate, self-motivated veterinary technician who is eager to advance their skills in a specialized oncology setting. The Oncology Veterinary Technician will play a critical role in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of oncology patients, working closely with veterinarians and other clinical staff to ensure comprehensive patient care. This position requires a technician with excellent communication skills, compassion, and the ability to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced, specialty veterinary hospital environment.
As an Oncology Veterinary Technician at BluePearl, you will be responsible for performing detailed physical exams, monitoring vital signs, and alerting the medical team about any abnormalities. Your expertise will include phlebotomy, intravenous catheter placement, medical calculations, and the preparation and administration of chemotherapy agents. You will also educate and support clients regarding their pet's treatment plans, medication administration, and potential side effects, ensuring the highest standard of care and client satisfaction. The right candidate will have at least two years of experience in a specialty veterinary hospital, a strong understanding of oncology protocols and terminology, and proficiency with anesthesia and monitoring equipment.

Job Duties
- Perform physical exam
- accurately count heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort
- understand normal vital and lab parameters and alert doctor when abnormal
- perform phlebotomy
- place peripheral intravenous catheter in cephalic vein
- calculate basic medical math
- set up appropriate materials for chemotherapy administration
- safely dispense and administer oral chemotherapy agents
- safely dispense, reconstitute and administer SC/IM chemotherapy agents
- check chemotherapy agent calculations and dosages
- properly shave and wrap for an IV catheter for chemotherapy infusion
- have knowledge of chemotherapy extravasation and appropriate responses
- admit oncology patients and obtain thorough history including current medications, dosages, response to treatment and side effects
- discharge oncology patients including basic client education on handling eliminations after chemotherapy, oral chemotherapy safety at home, side effects and medication administration
- maintain solid grasp of common veterinary medical terms and abbreviations
- address client concerns and answer appropriately during visits, updates, or after hospitalization
- have knowledge of tumor types
- understand diagnostic work-up protocols including oncology-specific terminology
- possess working knowledge of anesthesia/monitoring equipment and assist with patients assigned ASA I or II classifications
- remain current on RECOVER CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in designated role
- maintain hospital day-to-day functions such as stocking and cleaning
