Job Description
Western Veterinary Partners (WVP) is a prominent veterinary platform dedicated to enhancing the veterinary profession by supporting the growth and well-being of veterinarians, their teams, and the patients they serve. As a national network with over 350 partner hospitals, WVP offers diverse and comprehensive opportunities for veterinary students and professionals across the United States, including South Carolina. The company focuses on providing a supportive environment where veterinary teams can thrive both professionally and personally.
The externship program at Western Veterinary Partners is designed to offer meaningful hands-on experience, going beyond a simple educational requirement. Students have the opportunity to engage with high-quality veterinary practices throughout South Carolina, gaining real-world clinical experience in a variety of specialties. This externship is crafted to help veterinary students explore and identify the type of practice that best suits their career goals while building professional relationships that can endure throughout their careers.
WVP's mission is centered on improving the lives of veterinarians by fostering environments where both personal and professional growth are prioritized. This commitment is reflected in the culture of partnership hospitals, which are dedicated to collaborative, team-oriented settings that actively welcome and support students. The externships provide students direct access to experienced veterinarians and staff, with mentorship that encourages skill development and confident clinical decision-making.
Participants in the externship program can expect to gain exposure to a broad range of veterinary medicine disciplines, including small animal general practice, mixed animal medicine, urgent care, dentistry, exotic and avian medicine, feline-exclusive practices, and AAHA-accredited hospitals. This diversity ensures students are exposed to multiple facets of veterinary medicine and can better understand which specialty aligns with their ambitions and interests.
During the externship, students will have hands-on participation in physical examinations, patient assessments, diagnostic planning and interpretation, treatment planning, in-house laboratory procedures, surgical and dental procedures, and medical record documentation. In addition, they will develop critical skills such as client communication, case discussions, time management, workflow efficiency, and team collaboration. These experiences are essential to building a foundation for a successful veterinary career.
The externship provides significant benefits, including a $1,000 stipend for qualifying externships, flexible scheduling based on student interests and career goals, mentorship from seasoned veterinarians, and valuable networking opportunities. This program not only enhances clinical skills but also allows participants to evaluate potential future employers, a crucial step in career development.
Veterinary students in all years of veterinary school are encouraged to apply, whether they seek formal clinical rotations or informal externship experience. The program's flexibility and wide variety of practice settings allow students to tailor their experience to their unique educational and professional needs.
By choosing an externship with Western Veterinary Partners, veterinary students gain access to a well-rounded, supportive, and enriching environment designed to prepare them for successful careers in veterinary medicine while making meaningful contributions to animal health and welfare.
