The Utility Worker / Dishwasher role at Friendly Senior Living is a full-time, day-shift position from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., including every other weekend, responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and sanitary condition of the kitchen and dish room work areas, equipment, utensils, and tableware. This position plays a key role in ensuring hygiene and safety standards are met and supports the smooth operation of food service functions. The Utility Worker / Dishwasher will be expected to set up the workstation for silverware, glassware, china, and waste processing, operate dish machines efficiently, and keep the work environment orderly throughout the shift. Additional responsibilities include sweeping and mopping floors, proper disposal of waste and recyclables, delivering stock and meal carts to designated locations, and assisting with resident and guest service in the dining areas.

Success in this role requires a commitment to upholding excellent sanitation and food safety practices consistent with Friendly Senior Living’s policies and regulatory requirements. The Utility Worker / Dishwasher must demonstrate respect and professionalism when interacting with residents, coworkers, vendors, and visitors and maintain confidentiality concerning sensitive organizational and resident information. Dependability is critical, including punctuality, adherence to attendance policies, and willingness to work overtime and weekends as needed. Physical stamina to stand and walk for extended periods, the ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds, and a friendly, customer-service-minded attitude are essential.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to relate and be respectful to a wide variety of people and provide superior customer service to all including members, co-workers, vendors, family members and visitors

  • Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding information about members, co-workers, vendors, family members and visitors
  • Dependable, report to work on-time for every scheduled shift and work full schedule shifts unless physically unable or pre-approved Paid Time Off (PTO) which includes personal time and vacation time
  • Willing and able to work overtime and weekends as required by the position and/or approved by management
  • Have reliable transportation to and from work
  • Must be clean and neat in appearance and have a friendly, hospitality-oriented, and service-oriented demeanor

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or current enrollment required
  • Previous dish room experience preferred but not necessary
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively with residents and co-workers
  • Possess organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language
  • Ability to safely operate all job-related machines and equipment
  • Able to stand and walk for a majority of an 8-hour shift
  • Ability to lift, push and/or pull 50 pounds
  • Exhibit knowledge of proper food handling, sanitation, food safety regulations and infection control
  • Ability to learn routine procedures, techniques and to follow specific instructions
  • Ability to interact courteously and tactfully with staff, residents, family members, visitors, vendors and the general public

Job Duties

  • Set up workstation for silverware, glass, china, waste materials
  • Set up dish machine for shift
  • Maintain work area in a clean and orderly fashion while washing items
  • Clean items in assigned locations
  • Close area in clean and orderly fashion including sweeping and mopping floors
  • Collect and dispose properly of all trash and recyclables
  • Deliver stock to assigned locations
  • Deliver and pick up meal carts to skilled nursing units
  • Assist with service to residents and guests in the main dining room
  • Maintain sanitation and safety in dish room and kitchen areas
  • Handle and store all items and cleaning supplies safely in accordance to policy
  • Maintain acceptable level of customer satisfaction
  • Attend all staff meetings to address problems, concerns or plans
  • Adhere to departmental standard of dress
  • Comply with facility in-service requirements
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information related to the organization, residents, participants, family and staff
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
