Currently, the company is seeking motivated and skilled Utility Workers to join its team in San Jose, California. This position is integral to maintaining and ensuring the optimal operation of diesel locomotives and passenger railcars, contributing directly to the safe and smooth functioning of rail services.
The Utility Worker role at TransitAmerica Services offers a competitive hourly pay range of $33.63 to $36.65, reflecting the importance of the position in the organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing routine inspections and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems on rail equipment. This includes both interior and exterior evaluation as mandated by federal and state regulatory requirements, as well as company policies. The role is hands-on and requires proficiency in using various hand and power tools, completing detailed inspection reports, and prioritizing repair tasks. Utility Workers also assist in servicing restrooms on rail equipment and may be called upon to operate locomotives within maintenance facilities and perform facility maintenance tasks.
This position demands a strong safety mindset, the ability to work independently or as part of a team, and adaptability to changing work schedules including flexible shifts and overtime. Job Requirements
- Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review
- Maintain valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position
- Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen
- Pass and maintain DOT medical evaluation to drive Herzog commercial vehicle
- Successfully complete and maintain required safety certification and testing annually
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in mechanical, electrical, and/or pneumatic maintenance including automotive, diesel, HVAC, and railroad equipment
- Forklift certification preferred
- Railroad Engineer, Maintenance Facility Operator, or company certification preferred
- Proficient with hand and pneumatic tools
- Able to read repair manuals and follow instructions
- Strong safety awareness and ability to complete ongoing training
- Able to work independently or in a team with minimal supervision
- Adaptable to changing priorities
- Willing to work flexible shifts, schedules and overtime
- Ability to occasionally operate overhead cranes and drive company vehicles
Job Duties
- Performs daily inspection of mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems on diesel locomotives and passenger railcars within a specified time
- Conducts both interior and exterior inspections on rail equipment as required by federal and state regulatory agencies and company policies
- Completes equipment inspection forms, work order forms and other required documentation
- Prioritizes and completes repairs within specified time-periods
- Operates basic hand tools including digital multi-meters, pneumatic tools and testing equipment safely
- Cleans and maintains work area, tools and shop equipment
- Operates locomotives with or without passenger railcars within maintenance facilities
- Services restrooms on rail equipment including waste removal, potable water and biocide replenishment
- May operate pressure washer and wash rail equipment exterior
- Performs facility maintenance and in-house repair of electrical and mechanical components
- Assists Maintainer and Service Maintainer
- Reads, understands and interprets equipment repair manuals for maintenance, repair and troubleshooting
- Participates in ongoing training and testing
- Promotes and adheres to company culture and safety policies
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance and punctuality
- Performs other duties as assigned
