The position of Urgent Care Receptionist Medical Assistant within Optum Urgent Care at the College Point location offers a unique career opportunity for individuals interested in healthcare administration as well as direct patient care. The role requires a dedicated professional to manage patient check-in processes while also assisting clinicians by performing medical assistant duties such as taking vital signs, administering EKGs, performing lab tests, and preparing examination rooms. This hybrid role is essential for maintaining seamless coordination between the front office operations and clinical teams to support the overall mission of delivering excellent, comprehensive, and timely urgent care services.

As part of the Optum Care Delivery team, the successful candidate will work within a structured environment operating seven days a week, with a flexible schedule designed to meet patient volume needs. This position typically involves a 37.5-hour workweek with shifts assigned including afternoons, evenings, and weekends. The specific schedule is determined by the supervisor upon hire. The role emphasizes the importance of accuracy in data entry, insurance verification, scheduling, and payment collection while upholding patient confidentiality and providing empathetic customer service.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1+ years of computer proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • 1+ years of customer service or healthcare related experience
  • Ability to be cross trained as a medical assistant or have certification as a medical assistant
  • Ability to cover other offices if needed
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1+ years of computer proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • 1+ years of customer service or healthcare related experience
  • Ability to be cross trained as a medical assistant or have certification as a medical assistant
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Experience working in medical front office position preferred
  • Experience working with an electronic health record (EPIC) preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terms preferred

Job Duties

  • Greet patients and conduct check-in process including collecting or verifying demographic information
  • Load or update insurance information as needed
  • Answer telephone calls promptly and courteously for all specialties
  • Confirm and schedule appointments
  • Verify eligibility and authorization and flag appointment accordingly
  • Collect co-payments and outstanding balances
  • Post payments received in practice management system and provide system-generated receipts
  • Take vital signs, perform EKGs and assist providers with patient care
  • Prepare exam rooms for patients and document patient encounters in Epic
  • Perform lab testing and quality assurance
  • Prepare and track specimens sent to lab
  • Use call processing and other applicable functionality in the EHR to take messages and communicate with clinicians
  • Monitor daily reminder call logs and conduct outreach to patients requiring appointments
  • Scan and index documents into the EHR ensuring availability before patient visits
  • Assist coworkers to assure smooth office operation and delivery of excellent service
  • Demonstrate respect for patients and staff maintaining confidentiality
  • Perform other duties as assigned
