Job Description

The Morton Arboretum, located in Lisle, Illinois, is a renowned institution committed to tree care, scientific research, and community engagement. This position is part of CRTI, The Morton Arboretum's urban and community forestry program, which works to improve the health, diversity, and equitable distribution of trees across the Chicago region and throughout Illinois. The SCA Morton Arboretum Crew plays a vital role in supporting and expanding urban green spaces by assisting with tree planting, maintenance, and environmental projects that enhance green storm-water infrastructure and habitat.

This seasonal position runs from May 4, 2026, through October 30, 2026, with a schedule of 35 hours per week. Crew members will benefit from direct engagement with CRTI staff and community partners as well as professional development opportunities including tree care networking, training workshops, and exposure to urban forestry careers. The role involves hands-on work, such as tree planting, watering, mulching, and habitat restoration, as well as data collection and digital mapping training to support canopy conservation efforts. Crew members also participate in public volunteer events across the seven-county Chicagoland region, promoting environmental awareness and community stewardship. Transportation to project sites is provided from the Morton Arboretum headquarters in Lisle.

Beyond fieldwork, crew members have the opportunity for cross-departmental collaboration, including assisting Morton Arboretum scientific research and supporting partner agencies. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about outdoor work and contributing to regional environmental conservation, especially those interested in developing urban forestry skills and gaining experience in a professional and educational setting. The hourly wage for this position is $19, with eligibility for CPR/First Aid certification and potential qualification for the Open Lands-Chicago Arborist Apprenticeship program in the following season. This role requires the ability to perform physically demanding outdoor labor, work effectively in a team, and uphold the values representing SCA and CRTI.
