Job Description

The Boys' Club of New York (BCNY) is a distinguished youth development organization with a long-standing history dating back to its founding in 1876. Committed to empowering boys and young men aged 7 to 21, BCNY provides a nurturing and supportive environment aimed at fostering positive personal growth and development. Through its wide array of evidence-based programs, the organization addresses the evolving social, emotional, health, creative, educational, and vocational needs of its members. Located in the Bronx, BCNY has established itself as a cornerstone in the community by continuously innovating its programmatic offerings to remain relevant and impactful.

BCNY operates out of its clubhouse situated at 565 Morris Ave in the Bronx, NY. The club is deeply invested in creating meaningful and lasting impacts on youth by cultivating positive qualities such as leadership, responsibility, and teamwork. With a mission centered on supporting young people in their journey toward becoming well-rounded individuals, BCNY ensures that every program is tailored to meet the holistic needs of the youth it serves. The urban agriculture program, in particular, exemplifies this commitment by integrating environmental education with practical skill-building activities designed for boys aged 12 to 18.

The Program Specialist role at BCNY offers a unique opportunity for passionate individuals interested in urban agriculture and youth development. This part-time, non-exempt position, offering a competitive hourly wage of $30, involves working approximately 25 hours per week during weekday afternoons and evenings. The Specialist will play a crucial role in developing and implementing urban gardening and hydroponics programming at the Mott Haven clubhouse and in partnership with local organizations. Key responsibilities include collaborating closely with the Junior and Teen Directors to create engaging, youth-centered activities that promote social and emotional health alongside physical well-being.

The position demands a candidate with strong experience in managing urban gardens and familiarity with sustainable agriculture techniques such as hydroponics. The Program Specialist will not only instruct groups of adolescents but also oversee garden maintenance, including watering schedules, equipment inventory, and general upkeep to uphold a high standard of program quality. This role requires a proactive individual who can foster a safe, supportive, and stimulating environment, encourage positive behavioral interactions, and continuously assess and refine the curriculum based on participant feedback and performance.

The ideal applicant will bring at least two years of experience working in community gardens or similar spaces and at least one year of experience working with school-aged children. Strong communication, organizational skills, and adaptability are essential, as is a passion for environmental conservation and urban green spaces. Familiarity with the Mott Haven neighborhood or the surrounding Bronx community is preferred, ensuring that the program remains connected and responsive to local needs.

BCNY is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, committed to inclusivity and nondiscrimination in its hiring process. Candidates requiring accommodations are encouraged to reach out to Human Resources to ensure a supportive application and employment experience. This position represents a meaningful pathway for individuals eager to contribute positively to youth development and environmental education within an urban setting.
