Job Description
John Carroll University is a distinguished private, coeducational Jesuit Catholic university located in University Heights, Ohio, a serene residential suburb just 10 miles east of downtown Cleveland. Founded in 1886, the university has a longstanding commitment to fostering students who excel in both knowledge and character, preparing them as leaders and servants in their communities. Academically, the university is divided into the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Health, and the Boler College of Business, offering over 70 undergraduate academic programs across arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and business fields, with select graduate-level master's programs as well. With a student population of approximately 3,000 (2,500 undergraduates and 500 graduate students) and a favorable student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, John Carroll University has maintained excellence by being consistently ranked among the top 10 Midwest regional universities by U.S. News & World Report for more than three decades.
The campus environment fosters a diverse, inclusive, and spirited educational atmosphere aligned with Jesuit values. John Carroll University places a strong emphasis on community, leadership, service, and education, underscoring these principles in every department and role within the university. The University Police Department (JCUPD) embodies these commitments by ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and the extended community. This department operates on the guiding principles derived from the university’s mission and strategic plan, delivering dedicated service in all safety-related functions.
The position of University Security Officer at John Carroll University is essential in maintaining a secure and responsive campus environment. The officer is tasked with protecting the university community by addressing immediate security concerns, supporting law enforcement efforts, and fostering a welcoming atmosphere through community policing. This role requires independent decision-making within established guidelines, emphasizing adherence to university policies, proactive engagement with campus members, and readiness to respond effectively to emergencies.
Working under the supervision of the JCUPD, the Security Officer handles varied responsibilities such as responding to criminal, medical, and fire emergencies, conducting non-criminal report documentation, and undertaking proactive campus patrol duties. These patrols incorporate a community policing approach designed to build positive relationships and increase visibility on campus. Officers are expected to manage suspicious activities with impartiality and ensure the protection of university property by identifying and mitigating potential hazards.
Additional duties include managing event security, parking enforcement, and supporting key campus operations like gate attendants, shuttle services, and emergency medical services. The officer also facilitates services such as lost-and-found management, room lockouts, vehicle assistance, and other campus-related safety tasks. Monitoring of surveillance systems and alarm responses further enhance the campus’s safety framework.
The role demands flexibility, with working hours that often include 3rd-shift overnight coverage, weekends, holidays, and the possibility of overtime. Candidates must be prepared to meet physical demands, including standing, walking, running, and occasionally employing physical restraint in appropriate circumstances. The position is pivotal in upholding John Carroll University’s mission to inspire excellence in learning, leadership, and service by providing a secure environment where the academic community can thrive without fear or distraction.
