The role of a Unit Secretary at Wellstar is integral to the smooth operation of the nursing unit. Reporting to the Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager, the Unit Secretary's primary responsibility is to facilitate the delivery of safe, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive patient care. By performing clerical and receptionist functions, including computer order entry, data retrieval, and patient chart maintenance, the Unit Secretary serves as the central communication source on the unit. This position is vital in ensuring that operations flow seamlessly, patients' needs are communicated promptly, and the health care team has the necessary support to deliver exceptional care.
This position is scheduled during the night shift and demands a high level of detail orientation, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment. The Unit Secretary acts as a liaison between patients, families, and healthcare providers, demonstrating compassion, professionalism, and sensitivity at all times. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- less than 1 year clinical experience in acute care setting preferred
- ability to read, write and speak English

Job Duties
- Answer telephone calls and patient call lights and communicate to healthcare team patient needs
- facilitate patient admission, transfer and discharge as appropriate
- maintain paper medical record and scan documents into electronic medical record
- provide customer service by resolving patient concerns and offering comfort measures
- track bed activity and notify housekeeping of patient discharge
- assist in unit flow management during code situations
- perform charge and staffing reconciliation and submit supply requisitions
- transport unit supplies, patient care supplies, medications and equipment as assigned
- participate in interdisciplinary rounds as scribe and facilitate outcome activities
- communicate patient care concerns to the RN
- operate and maintain computer and IT equipment
- provide a safe environment by following infection control policies
- maintain cleanliness and organization of patient rooms and unit areas
- comply with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards, and code of conduct
