The Environmental Services team at Michigan Medicine is an essential part of this mission, working diligently to maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards that are crucial to patient safety and infection prevention. We are currently seeking temporary full-time Unit Custodians based at our Ann Arbor location to join our dynamic team. As a Unit Custodian on our Environmental Services team, you will be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within the hospital setting. Your duties will involve thorough cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection of patient care areas, restrooms, and common spaces to help reduce the risk of infectious diseases. This role requires the safe handling of hazardous waste and bodily fluids, utilizing proper personal protective equipment in adherence to health and safety regulations. Working in this position means you will be on the front lines of infection control, contributing directly to the quality of patient care and overall hospital operations.

The Unit Custodian position demands a strong commitment to consistent attendance, excellent work performance, and outstanding customer service skills. Candidates must be physically capable of performing a wide range of activities, including lifting, bending, pushing, and pulling, without restrictions. These custodians also engage with patients and staff, requiring them to have a positive attitude and effective communication skills. Work shifts may vary and include days, afternoons, midnights, weekends, and holidays, reflecting the 24/7 nature of hospital operations.

Job Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English and be able to follow instructions
  • Must have a positive attitude with good customer relation skills
  • Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching, etc
  • Must not have any type of lifting restrictions
  • Must be able to work around sick and disabled patients (children and adults) within a hospital setting
  • Must be a team player, able to prioritize work and be able to handle stress on a daily basis
  • Must be able to perform all tasks listed on the Unit Custodian Classification Description

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience

Job Duties

  • Operate vacuum cleaning equipment
  • Clean and polish furniture, cases, fixtures and furnishings
  • Clean mirrors, inside of exterior glass and both sides of interior glass
  • Clean toilet rooms and fixtures
  • Stock restroom supplies
  • Dust venetian blinds
  • Spot wash walls
  • Clean patient bedside equipment
  • Make beds and change linen
  • Change or replace shower or cubical curtains
  • Collect and transport waste materials and soiled linen to central location
  • Report items in need of repair
  • Sweep and/or dust mop floors and stairways
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies in accordance with specific instructions
  • Move and arrange furniture and furnishings
  • Clean assigned area or work and equipment
  • Wet mop floors, rooms and stairways
  • Hand mop areas inaccessible to mechanical floor cleaning equipment
  • Operate walk behind equipment used for routine floor cleaning
  • Operate touch free spray/vacuum cleaning equipment
