The Unit Custodian role at Michigan Medicine is a key position within the UM Hospital's Environmental Services department. This full-time, onsite position is essential for maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment within the hospital setting. Working under the collective bargaining agreement with the AFSCME union, the Unit Custodian is responsible for an array of cleaning and custodial duties designed to support patient care areas, staff workspaces, and public areas of the hospital.

The custodial duties include operating vacuum cleaning equipment, polishing and cleaning furniture and fixtures, sanitizing restrooms, and maintaining floor cleanliness using various methods such as sweeping, mopping, and operating walk-behind cleaning machines. The position also involves tasks like making beds, changing linens, managing laundry collections, and reporting maintenance and repair needs. Given the hospital environment, the Unit Custodian must perform these responsibilities while working around sick and disabled patients, ensuring that safety and hygiene standards are rigorously upheld.

This role demands physical stamina and the ability to perform a wide range of physically active tasks, including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, and reaching, without restrictions. The ability to read, write, and understand English and follow verbal and written instructions is required for effective communication and task completion. As a team player, the Unit Custodian must prioritize work efficiently, manage daily stress, and contribute positively to the hospital's operational needs.

Michigan Medicine offers a competitive salary range of $42,348.80 to $45,905.60 annually for this position. Employees also enjoy excellent medical, dental, and vision coverage effective from day one, as well as a retirement plan featuring a 2:1 match on savings. The role operates on a set schedule of 40 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
