Job Description

Seeking a committed and detail-oriented Unit Custodian to join the MM Environmental Services team at Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor, MI. This part-time, onsite role offers a work schedule of 32 hours per week, specifically nights from Wednesday through Saturday, 11:30 PM to 8:00 AM. The Unit Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and staff within the hospital setting.

The role involves a variety of cleaning and custodial duties aimed at sustaining the hygiene and upkeep of patient care areas and other hospital spaces. Responsibilities include operating vacuum cleaning and other floor care equipment, cleaning and polishing furniture, fixtures, and glass surfaces, cleaning toilet rooms and restocking supplies, dusting blinds and spot washing walls, managing waste and soiled linen, and maintaining inventory of cleaning supplies. The position demands physical stamina and the ability to perform various physical tasks such as lifting, pushing, bending, and reaching, with no lifting restrictions.

A successful candidate must be able to follow verbal and written instructions proficiently, work effectively as a team member, prioritize tasks efficiently, and manage stress in a demanding hospital environment. The position is union-affiliated under the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement, which covers wages, benefits, and work conditions.

Job Requirements

  • Must not have any type of lifting restrictions
  • Must be able to work around sick and disabled patients (children and adults) within a hospital setting

Job Duties

  • Operate vacuum cleaning equipment
  • Clean and polish furniture, cases, fixtures, and furnishings
  • Clean mirrors, inside of exterior glass, and both sides of interior glass while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • Clean toilet rooms and fixtures
  • Stock restroom supplies
  • Dust venetian blinds while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • Spot wash walls to remove such items as splash marks around sinks and fingerprints around light switches
  • Clean patient bedside equipment
  • Make beds and change linen
  • Change or replace shower or cubicle curtains while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • Collect and transport waste materials to a central location
  • Report items in need of repair
  • Sweep and/or dust mop floors and stairways
  • Wet mop rooms and small areas of floor or stairs to clean up such items as spilled liquid or food
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies in accordance with specific instructions
  • Open or lock buildings or rooms
  • Turn on and off lights and equipment
  • Replace burnt-out incandescent light bulbs while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • Move and arrange furniture and furnishings
  • Collect and transport soiled linen to central locations
  • Clean the assigned area or work and equipment
  • Wet mop floors and stairways, including carpeted areas
  • Hand mop areas inaccessible to mechanical floor cleaning equipment
  • Operate walk-behind equipment used for routine floor cleaning
  • Operate touch-free spray/vacuum cleaning equipment
