The role of Unit Custodian at Michigan Medicine offers a vital opportunity to contribute directly to a clean and safe healthcare environment. This part-time, onsite position is based at the Kahn Health Care Pavilion and involves working 32 hours per week during midnight shifts from Friday to Monday. The Unit Custodian will be responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of hospital areas including patient rooms and common spaces, making sure they meet high standards of hygiene and safety needed in a hospital setting. The position requires operating various cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners and touch-free spray/vacuum devices, polishing furniture, cleaning fixtures and glass, changing linens and curtains, and managing waste materials. Custodians also play a key role in maintaining restroom supplies, spotting wash walls, moving furniture as needed, and reporting items that require repair. This position requires physical capability to perform extensive cleaning duties that include lifting, bending, and pushing, with no lifting restrictions.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to read, write, and understand English, along with the capacity to follow both verbal and written instructions. Being a team player, managing work priorities, and handling daily work-related stress are essential qualities for success in this role. The custodian must also be comfortable working around sick and disabled patients, including both children and adults, which requires discretion, professionalism, and compassion. Hired custodians will be expected to perform all tasks listed on the Unit Custodian Classification Description to ensure consistent and high-quality cleaning services that contribute to patient safety and comfort.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement with the AFSCME union, which governs important work terms such as wages, benefits, and hours. Job Duties

  • Operate vacuum cleaning equipment
  • clean and polish furniture, cases, fixtures, and furnishings
  • clean mirrors, inside of exterior glass, and both sides of interior glass while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • clean toilet rooms and fixtures
  • stock restroom supplies
  • dust venetian blinds while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • spot wash walls to remove splash marks and fingerprints
  • clean patient bedside equipment
  • make beds and change linen
  • change or replace shower or cubicle curtains while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • collect and transport waste materials to a central location
  • report items in need of repair
  • sweep and/or dust mop floors and stairways
  • wet mop rooms and small areas of floor or stairs
  • maintain an inventory of supplies
  • open or lock buildings or rooms
  • turn on and off lights and equipment
  • replace burnt-out incandescent light bulbs
  • move and arrange furniture and furnishings
  • collect and transport soiled linen
  • clean the assigned area and equipment
  • wet mop floors and stairways, including carpeted areas
  • hand mop areas inaccessible to mechanical floor cleaning equipment
  • operate walk-behind equipment for routine floor cleaning
  • operate touch-free spray/vacuum cleaning equipment
