The role available is that of a Unit Clerk within the Med/Surg Department, a position integral to the smooth operation of the unit. As the welcoming face and voice of the department, the Unit Clerk plays an essential role in managing key clerical tasks and patient interactions that are vital to the unit’s functionality. This role demands a highly organized individual with exceptional communication skills who demonstrates a proactive work ethic and a compassionate approach towards patients, their families, and the care team. Responsibilities include answering and transferring phone calls, scanning patient documents into the hospital's electronic health records system, preparing transfer packets for patients, facilitating staffing management, completing supply requisitions, tracking durable medical equipment, responding to nurse call system notifications, and performing various administrative and clerical duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Possession of United States proof of citizenship or right to work in the United States
  • Possession of a driver's license or analogous identification
  • Knowledge of principles related to the position
  • Aptitude in verbal and written communication, including ability to communicate with persons in all age groups
  • Aptitude in basic phone skills
  • Aptitude in basic clerical skills

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of principles related to the position
  • Aptitude in verbal and written communication, including ability to communicate with persons in all age groups
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications is preferred
  • Healthcare experience preferred

Job Duties

  • Serve Med/Surg and ICU through performance of department and service support activities
  • Assume the role as the unit's ambassador, with polite interactions and greeting patients, visitors, and staff as they come into the medical unit
  • Answer and transfer internal and external phone calls
  • Scan patient documents into the hospital health information management system
  • Prepare transfer packets as directed by unit charge nurse or House Supervisor for patients being transferred to another hospital
  • Facilitate staffing management including contacting staff, expediting break provision for working staff, preparing and distributing staffing sheets as directed
  • Complete requisitions for unit supplies
  • Track rented durable medical equipment
  • Respond to and triage notifications sent via nurse call system
  • Perform administrative and clerical duties as assigned
