Job Description

Michigan State University (MSU) is a renowned public research university located in East Lansing, Michigan, recognized for its comprehensive educational programs and commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community. MSU operates a variety of campus services dedicated to supporting student life, including its Residential and Hospitality Services (RHS) division, which manages numerous food service operations throughout the campus. RHS emphasizes providing high-quality, accessible food options to the student body and community members in a vibrant, welcoming environment. This role is positioned within the Union, one of MSU's central hubs for student activity and dining services.

The Union AM Cook I position at MSU's Culinary Services Retail is a full-time role focused on the preparation, seasoning, cooking, and portioning of a wide variety of foods to meet the needs of a large student-based food service. This role requires working within a diverse and dynamic workforce that adapts to changing conditions and continuously strives to deliver exceptional food service experiences. As a critical status position within RHS, the role demands commitment during university closures or emergency situations, with expectations to report to work unless otherwise arranged. The successful candidate must be highly flexible, capable of working different shifts, and able to support the team in maintaining a clean, organized work area while managing student staff efficiently.

This position requires a minimum of two years of satisfactory experience as a Food Service Worker or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience, coupled with practical knowledge of various cooking methods, processes, and materials. The Cook I must adhere strictly to prescribed recipes and sanitation standards, particularly personal hygiene in compliance with food safety regulations. Physical demands include occasional lifting of items weighing between 26 to 75 pounds. The role's work schedule is Sunday through Thursday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with Fridays and Saturdays off, providing a balanced workweek.

Candidates are expected to be customer-oriented, proactive, and capable of anticipating changes in service needs to enhance customer satisfaction. The ability to take initiative and adapt to new challenges is highly valued. MSU supports equal employment opportunities for all qualified applicants without discrimination. The position requires submission of a resume for application consideration and offers benefits commensurate with a full-time role in the service maintenance group. The Union AM Cook I will play a vital role in sustaining the daily operations of MSU's culinary service, ensuring the delivery of safe, delicious, and timely meals to students and university staff in a bustling campus environment.
