The Ultrasound Intern position within the Ultrasound Department at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center is an integral training role designed to provide hands-on experience and skill development in diagnostic ultrasound procedures. Reporting to and supervised by experienced Ultrasound Technologists, the intern is responsible for competently performing diagnostic procedures aimed at identifying specific diseases or conditions. This internship offers a unique opportunity for aspiring sonographers to gain valuable clinical experience in a supportive and professional setting. Working primarily during day shifts, the Ultrasound Intern will utilize state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment and technology in a busy hospital environment.

This role includes performing all diagnostic ultrasound procedures under varying levels of supervision, ensuring patient safety and comfort, and effectively communicating with supervising radiologists to adhere to exam protocols and special instructions. Maintaining accurate records and documentation through the Radiology Information System (RIS) is a critical function, aimed at facilitating timely access to studies for interpretation. The intern will also uphold stringent infection control guidelines and patient safety goals while contributing to quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives within the department. This position emphasizes compassionate patient interaction, technical proficiency, and adherence to professional standards.

Candidates for this internship must be enrolled in or have graduated from an accredited sonography certificate or diploma program and should be eligible for registry by ARRT or ARDMS within 12 months of the internship. Additionally, certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is required. Previous experience in diagnostic and vascular sonography is preferred but not mandatory. The internship provides a platform to develop effective communication, technical skills, and professionalism essential for a successful career in diagnostic medical sonography.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of an accredited sonography certificate or diploma program
  • ARRT (Sonography) or ARDMS Registry eligible
  • Must register by ARDMS or ARRT within 12 months of internship
  • Current AHA BLS certification
  • Preferably 1 year experience in sonography
  • Technical skills in diagnostic and vascular sonography

Job Duties

  • Perform all procedures within the Ultrasound Section of the Radiology Department
  • Operate ultrasound equipment competently
  • Assess patients and review orders or chart to confirm reason for exam
  • Ensure documentation of patient symptoms, clinical history, and signed consent forms
  • Prepare patients for procedures and communicate effectively with supervising radiologists
  • Accurately record exam start and end times in the Radiology Information System
  • Maintain safe environment following infection control guidelines and patient safety goals
  • Monitor timeliness of exams and quality of care
  • Perform quality assurance of exams prior to radiologist interpretation
  • Participate in department Performance Improvement Projects
  • Perform other assigned duties
