The role of an Office Sonographer specializing in maternal fetal medicine at Memorial Healthcare System involves performing advanced diagnostic sonography procedures adhering to professional standards and organizational policies. This position requires a deep understanding of fetal anatomy, abnormalities, and diagnostic imaging techniques across all trimesters of pregnancy. The sonographer will operate and maintain ultrasound equipment, ensure image quality, and assist Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) physicians with ultrasound-guided procedures such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS), amniocentesis, and percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS). The role demands the capability to troubleshoot equipment, implement safety standards based on the ALARA principle, and accurately document findings.
This is a highly specialized role that integrates patient education, clinical expertise, and technical proficiency in a high-volume, complex healthcare environment. The sonographer will be responsible for interacting with patients, reviewing medical histories, and collaborating closely with medical staff to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of diagnostic evaluations. Candidates must show a willingness to pursue continuing medical education to stay updated with evolving ultrasound techniques and technology. Flexibility to travel between different clinic sites and potentially work variable shifts or weekends is required.
The position values critical thinking, effective communication, and independent judgment within a supportive team setting. It requires a minimum of one year of OBGYN sonography experience, with a preference for those experienced in a Maternal Fetal Medicine practice. Certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), Basic Life Support (BLS), and other specialized credentials in OBGYN and fetal imaging are essential for this role. Physical requirements include the capacity to perform various physical activities such as bending, kneeling, carrying patients, and working extensively with computer and imaging equipment.

Job Requirements

- one year of OBGYN sonography experience
- certification as ultrasound technologist
- ARDMS registration
- BLS certification from American Heart Association or Red Cross
- ability to work in a high-volume complex environment
- understanding of fetal anatomy across all trimesters
- knowledge of Doppler ultrasound techniques
- ability to perform diagnostic transvaginal ultrasound
- interest in continued medical education
- reliable transportation for clinic site travel
- availability for variable shifts or weekend work
- must obtain required certifications within one year of hire
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- certified ultrasound technologist
- American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification required
- BLS certification from American Heart Association or Red Cross required
- at least one year of OBGYN sonography experience
- experience in maternal fetal medicine practice preferred
- knowledge and ability to perform diagnostic transvaginal ultrasound
- familiarity with Doppler techniques and their indications
- skills in evaluating multiple gestations, chorionicity and amnionicity
- proficiency with 3D imaging preferred
- continued medical education interest
- ability to travel between clinic sites
- ability to work variable shifts or weekends
- maintain required certifications such as RCDS, OBGYN, Nuchal Translucency (NT) certifications
- preferred certifications include Nasal Bone, Cervical Length Education and Review (CLEAR), American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM), and Fetal Echo
Job Duties
- Implement safety standards with low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) principle and perform quality control on equipment
- troubleshoot, resolve, and report equipment malfunctions
- demonstrate knowledge of healthcare systems and MFM division’s electronic medical records and ultrasound reporting systems
- select appropriate imaging parameters, modes, and techniques to document anatomical, pathological and functional data
- prepare office and ultrasound equipment and coordinate service, maintenance, and quality assurance
- prepare and maintain documentation as required
- actively participate in policy and procedure design and implementation
- position patients and perform imaging procedures, analyze image quality and resolve issues
- perform routine and advanced diagnostic ultrasound procedures at an advanced specialist skill level
- review patient history and physician's orders
- educate patients about procedures and exams
- assist MFM physician with ultrasound-guided procedures and specimen collection
- report anomalies found in scans and obtain follow-up images
- follow established protocols for fetal evaluation and diagnosis
