Job Description
The University of Delaware Nanofabrication Facility (UDNF) is a leading-edge research environment dedicated to supporting advanced scientific and engineering projects. Situated within the Harker ISE Lab on the Newark Campus, UDNF encompasses an 8,500-square-foot cleanroom facility divided into Class 100 and Class 1000 spaces. These highly controlled environments are critical for researchers conducting precise, contamination-sensitive work in nanotechnology and related fields. Used by both University of Delaware researchers and external collaborators on a pay-per-use basis, the facility represents a vital hub for innovation and discovery in nanofabrication techniques. The staff and users of the cleanroom rely heavily on maintaining a pristine environment to ensure the integrity and success of their experiments.
The role of the Cleanroom Porter at UDNF is central to preserving these stringent cleanliness standards. This part-time, staff position offers a pay range of $15 to $20 per hour and requires a commitment of 25 to 30 hours per week, typically spread across five days. The Cleanroom Porter’s primary duty is to uphold a white-glove standard of cleanliness within the cleanroom spaces. This encompasses routine tasks such as mopping, vacuuming, and meticulously wiping down both horizontal and vertical surfaces to prevent contamination. Ensuring that the environment meets the facility’s high cleanliness benchmarks directly supports and enhances the productivity and accuracy of ongoing research.
Beyond cleaning, the Cleanroom Porter is tasked with maintaining auxiliary elements of the facility’s upkeep. This includes the upkeep of tacky mats that capture particulate matter before entry into sensitive areas, emptying trash receptacles, and managing the inventory of commonly used supplies by restocking as necessary. Importantly, the position involves assisting researchers and visitors with gowning protocols upon entry to the cleanroom. This role requires the Cleanroom Porter to be knowledgeable about and compliant with established protocols and safety standards, actively fostering a secure and contamination-free workspace.
Candidates for this position are not required to have prior cleanroom experience, as comprehensive training will be provided. The ideal applicant is self-motivated with strong attention to detail, reliability, punctuality, and the ability to follow multi-step instructions precisely. This role demands physical stamina due to frequent standing, bending, crouching, stooping, climbing, and reaching above shoulder level, with occasional lifting of items between 25 to 50 pounds. In addition to physical demands, the role involves wearing cleanroom garments and receiving extensive safety training to ensure compliance with protocols designed to protect both personnel and experimental processes.
Working at UDNF offers employees the chance to be part of cutting-edge scientific research support while enjoying the benefits and competitive compensation packages offered by the University of Delaware. This includes access to various total rewards benefits and a supportive environment that values equal opportunity and diversity, adhering strictly to non-discrimination policies. The Cleanroom Porter position is ideal for individuals seeking to contribute meaningfully to a research institution while developing skills related to facility maintenance and protocol compliance in a highly specialized setting.
