Job Description
Reading Assist is a well-established nonprofit organization dedicated to improving literacy outcomes for elementary students across the United States. Through innovative and research-based reading intervention programs, Reading Assist empowers children who struggle with reading by equipping educators and tutors with the tools and training necessary for effective reading instruction. Their commitment is to foster early literacy skills and nurture a love of learning in young minds, promoting educational equity and success for all students.
The Tutors to Teachers Delaware program is a collaborative initiative between Reading Assist and Wilmington University, designed to offer participants a unique pathway toward a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Special Education coupled with Delaware state teaching licensure. This comprehensive program requires a commitment of five years, combining service, education, and practical teaching experience. In the first year, participants work as Fellows in the Reading Assist-AmeriCorps program while simultaneously taking graduate courses at Wilmington University. The second year involves a full-time teaching residency in a Delaware school district, where Fellows gain invaluable classroom experience and receive an additional stipend. The final three years dedicate Fellows to teaching in Delaware schools, applying their refined skills and expertise to impact student learning outcomes positively.
This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about literacy, education, and community service to make a meaningful difference. Fellows will lead daily one-on-one or small group reading sessions focused on foundational reading skills with students from kindergarten through fifth grade who face significant reading challenges. The position is part-time, requiring 26-28 hours per week and offering a schedule option either Monday through Friday mornings or Tuesday through Thursday full days. Fellows are expected to complete 900 service hours annually and maintain a 3.0 GPA in their graduate coursework. The program emphasizes personalized lesson planning, ongoing coaching, and active engagement in the AmeriCorps community.
Compensation for this role ranges between $20,000 and $50,000 annually, including stipends, a living allowance, education awards, and tuition assistance that significantly reduce the cost of obtaining a Master's degree. Additional benefits include healthcare coverage, professional development opportunities, relocation assistance for eligible candidates, and job placement support within Delaware after graduation. With a strong focus on collaboration, resilience, and professional growth, Reading Assist’s Tutors to Teachers Delaware program offers participants a rewarding career pathway in education while addressing critical literacy needs within the community.
