Job Description
The New York Foundling is a distinguished nonprofit organization based in New York, founded in 1869. With over 150 years of impactful service, the organization is deeply committed to empowering children, youth, and families to achieve stability, independence, and wellbeing. The Foundling’s programs span foster care, developmental disability support, mental health services, and family strengthening initiatives. Rooted in evidence-based practices, the organization’s holistic approach addresses the full spectrum of needs for the individuals and families it serves, focusing on whole-person, whole-family, and whole-life outcomes. As a nonprofit, The New York Foundling has built a reputation for advocacy and comprehensive care, effectively blending compassion with innovative solutions to break cycles of poverty and trauma within diverse communities across New York City.
The tutoring position at The New York Foundling is a vital role dedicated to supporting students connected to the foster care system. This role goes beyond traditional tutoring and involves academic mentorship, advocacy for educational resources, and fostering academic achievement for youth who might otherwise face barriers to success. Tutors are responsible for forging strong relationships with students, caregivers, and other stakeholders to ensure consistency and progress in academic goals. The role requires providing tailored, culturally competent instruction in core academic subjects and remedial skill-building while also navigating the unique needs of children in foster care. Tutors are expected to travel across multiple boroughs—Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn—to deliver in-person sessions and advocate on behalf of students for additional educational opportunities.
In this position, professionals have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference by directly impacting students’ academic journeys and helping them overcome challenges by connecting them with school and community resources. They also participate in ongoing professional development, coaching, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to refine their practice. This dynamic role demands strong communication, adaptability, problem-solving skills, and a dedication to holistic education and advocacy. The position offers a competitive hourly wage of $29.73, with additional education and bilingual additives. It is primarily an in-person role that requires consistent travel and documentation, involving both face-to-face tutoring and virtual administrative work to support student progress comprehensively. Join The New York Foundling as a Tutor and become part of an organization that not only shapes educational outcomes but also transforms lives through commitment and innovation.
