Job Description
Penske Truck Leasing is a premier global transportation provider offering innovative and essential services in transportation, logistics, and technology to support companies and individuals in moving forward efficiently and reliably. Headquartered in Reading, Pennsylvania, Penske prides itself on a strong commitment to excellence and customer success, maintaining a significant presence in the transportation industry with extensive nationwide operations. Their dedication to quality and safety, combined with a supportive work environment, attracts motivated professionals who want to contribute meaningfully to the company and advance their careers.
The part-time Hiker (Vehicle Transporter/Truck Driver) role at Penske Truck Leasing is an ideal opportunity for individuals holding a CDL Class B license, and for those with a CDL Class A license, to earn supplementary income by transporting Penske vehicles and equipment between company locations and customer sites. This position involves operating box trucks up to 26 feet in length, and for CDL Class A drivers, includes handling tractor-trailer movements. The job primarily entails vehicle delivery responsibilities and occasionally assisting the service department by delivering parts and equipment as needed. Its part-time, casual, and on-call nature provides flexibility, allowing individuals to work up to 25 hours per week based on business demands.
This position is located at 2201 E Michigan Ave, Ypsilanti, MI, and offers competitive hourly pay rates of $20 for CDL Class A drivers and $19 for CDL Class B drivers. It requires a high level of safety consciousness, mechanical awareness to check vehicle conditions regularly, and excellent customer service skills to manage delivery confirmations and payment collections when applicable. The role is regulated by the Department of Transportation standards and requires the maintenance of a driver qualification file, including annual physical examinations and background checks, to ensure compliance and safety on the road.
Qualified candidates will have at least two years of clean driving experience with a valid CDL Class B license, with preference given to those holding a CDL Class A license. The job demands the ability to read and follow written instructions, independent work capabilities, strong organizational skills, and a positive attitude. Proficiency in English is mandatory due to federal regulations, and candidates must be willing to undergo necessary drug screenings and background investigations.
Physically, the job requires the ability to perform various activities such as standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds regularly (and occasionally up to 100 pounds), and safely entering and exiting vehicles and cargo areas. Candidates must have adequate vision and hearing capabilities to safely operate a vehicle and manage tasks effectively. Penske is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
This part-time opportunity is well suited to drivers looking for supplemental employment with flexible scheduling, a supportive environment, and the chance to work for a well-established leader in the transportation industry. Penske Truck Leasing values safety above all else, demanding a high level of alertness and responsibility, which are essential attributes for success in this role. Those interested in joining Penske’s dedicated team should be prepared for a thorough hiring process, including medicals and safety history reviews. Ultimately, this position offers a rewarding path for CDL drivers to contribute to a respected company, maintain a healthy work-life balance, and enhance their professional driving experience.
