Job Description
Penske Truck Leasing is a leading global transportation provider known for delivering innovative and essential transportation, logistics, and technology solutions that help companies and individuals move forward efficiently. Headquartered in Reading, Pennsylvania, Penske is committed to operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and driving success for its clients and employees alike. With a workforce dedicated to integrity and service quality, Penske fosters a supportive and dynamic work environment that nurtures career development and values diversity. The company’s reputation for professionalism and reliability makes it a sought-after employer in the transportation industry.
The position of Hiker (Vehicle Transporter/Truck Driver) at Penske Truck Leasing offers an excellent opportunity for small fleet and professional drivers to join a respected industry leader. This casual, on-call part-time role is specifically suited for licensed CDL Class B drivers, and preferably CDL Class A holders, who seek supplemental income and flexible work hours ranging from zero to 25 hours per week. The core responsibility of this role includes transporting Penske’s box trucks, which are up to 26 feet in length, as well as moving tractor-trailers for CDL Class A drivers if applicable. Additionally, this role may support the service department by delivering parts and equipment to various locations.
As a Hiker, the driver ensures timely and safe vehicle deliveries to Penske locations or directly to customers, always adhering to strict safety protocols. The position demands a commitment to inspecting vehicles for mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment functionality before operations begin. Detailed reporting of any defects or vehicle issues to the location manager is mandatory, ensuring that all transported vehicles meet the company’s high standards for safety and reliability.
Beyond vehicle transport, the Hiker is also responsible for obtaining necessary signatures or receipts for delivered goods, and in some cases, collecting payments for services rendered. Reporting accidents, traffic violations, or vehicle damages is a fundamental part of maintaining compliance and accountability within the role. The incumbent may also undertake various tasks and projects assigned by supervisors to support overall operations.
This role requires flexibility and availability to work during evenings and weekends as dictated by the business demands. The position is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) due to its safety-sensitive nature, necessitating regular physical exams, drug screenings, and maintenance of a driver qualification file to remain compliant. Candidates must display a high level of responsibility and alertness, ensuring that safety protocols are followed for both personal and public wellbeing.
In terms of physical demands, the role requires the ability to move frequently, stand, walk, and lift heavy items weighing up to 100 pounds occasionally. Drivers must have sharp vision and hearing capabilities, and the ability to enter and exit vehicles safely and efficiently. English language proficiency is essential for following written instructions and fulfilling federal regulatory requirements.
Overall, this Hiker position at Penske Truck Leasing is ideal for individuals who want a part-time driving opportunity with a reputable company that values safety, customer service, and professional growth, offering competitive compensation at $20.10 per hour for Class C drivers. It is a chance to be part of a company that leads the transportation industry, with a culture that prioritizes employee wellbeing and customer success.
