Job Description
TRIO Programs is a dedicated educational initiative aimed at supporting first-generation and low-income students to successfully navigate the path to higher education. This program operates through federal grants to provide comprehensive guidance, educational programming, and resources that empower youth to overcome socioeconomic barriers associated with postsecondary education. TRIO Programs are typically found within universities and community organizations, focusing on expanding educational access and equity for underserved populations. The organization is committed to supporting students in improving their academic skills, understanding financial aid options, and developing career readiness to increase college retention and graduation rates. \n\nThe Advisor-Coordinator role within TRIO Programs is a temporary, full-time position that plays a critical role in the recruitment, engagement, and academic preparation of target high school students—specifically those who are first-generation college aspirants or from low-income backgrounds. The position is located at Bartlett, West, and/or Bettye Davis East High Schools as well as on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. The Advisor-Coordinator works directly with students, families, and school personnel to deliver one-on-one advising, group workshops, and outreach activities that address postsecondary admissions processes, financial aid, including FAFSA completion, and student recruitment strategies. This position is essential in ensuring compliance with federal TRIO grant requirements, including detailed record keeping and reporting, while also fostering a collaborative, student-centered environment. \n\nSuccessful candidates will demonstrate a passion for educational equity and a commitment to supporting underrepresented populations in their educational journey. The role requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills, experience working with at-risk or underrepresented students, and proficiency in data management systems along with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications. The ability to facilitate engaging, informative sessions and to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders is key. Flexibility for evening or weekend events and a safety-conscious approach to supervising student activities are also important for this position. This temporary assignment extends through September 2026 with potential for renewal based on funding and program needs, classified under the UA Temporary Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 79. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions and must pass a background check as part of the hiring process.
