Job Description

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital is a prominent full-service acute-care hospital located at the intersection of Interstate 45 and Texas State Highway 242. Since opening its doors in June 2017, this 725,000-square-foot medical facility has established itself as a vital healthcare provider in the Texas Medical Center area. The hospital offers a comprehensive range of medical services designed to cater to the diverse needs of its patient population. These include specialized centers such as the Breast Care Center, Cancer Center, infusion center, heart and vascular services, neurology, orthopedics and sports medicine, rehabilitation services, wellness services, an outpatient laboratory, and multiple multispecialty physician practices. In January 2022, Houston Methodist The Woodlands expanded its capabilities with the addition of Healing Tower, a $250 million project that introduced 106 new beds focused on medical-surgical and women's services. The expansion also enhanced critical departments including the endoscopy center, emergency department, and diagnostic imaging department, which now boasts an advanced neurodiagnostic and interventional center. This growth underscores Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge care and advanced treatment options to its community.

The Transporter position at Houston Methodist plays a critical role in supporting the hospital's mission of providing high-quality patient care and ensuring seamless operations. This role is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of acute, intensive, and critical care patients within the hospital complex using wheelchairs, stretchers, transcart, or beds. Transporters move patients to various essential areas including diagnostic testing locations, therapeutic treatment centers, clinics, physicians' offices, and facilitate admissions and discharges. Beyond simply moving patients, this role supports the interprofessional healthcare team by assisting with fall prevention strategies, such as retrieving and managing Hover Mats and assisting patients with transferring to stretchers safely. Effective communication skills are vital for this position, as Transporters frequently coordinate with nursing staff and other hospital personnel to ensure patient safety and comfort during transit.

In addition to patient transport, Transporters assist with logistics related to patient room furnishings including the delivery of bed extensions, sleep chairs, and the transport of empty beds when necessary. Their responsibilities extend to maintaining cleanliness and safety by properly disposing of soiled linens and equipment, disinfecting transport devices after use, and reporting equipment that requires repair. The Transporter also contributes to hospital safety protocols by following infection control procedures, practicing universal precautions, and supporting initiatives to reduce patient falls, pressure injuries, and hospital-acquired infections.

Employees in this role are expected to function as team players with a strong customer service mindset, contributing towards positive patient experiences and organizational goals related to staff retention and patient satisfaction. The position is non-exempt and requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association within 90 days of employment. Although the role does not require uniform wear, scrubs are specified attire, and Transporters must be prepared to be on-call during emergencies such as disasters or severe weather events.

Working at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital offers opportunities for professional growth and development. Transporters are encouraged to participate in ongoing education, in-service training, and hospital performance improvement projects to hone their skills and contribute to the continuous enhancement of patient care and departmental efficiency. By joining Houston Methodist, employees become part of an equal opportunity employer that values diversity, equity, and the pursuit of excellence in healthcare delivery.
