This job opportunity is for a part-time, temporary Specialized Driver position within Norfolk Public Schools. The role is grant-funded and does not include employee benefits. The position involves working approximately two to three shifts per day, with estimated shift times from 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM and/or 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The primary responsibility of the Specialized Driver is to provide safe and reliable transportation services for students who qualify under the McKinney Vento Act. These students require dependable transit options to ensure consistent attendance and access to educational opportunities. Additionally, this role supports the Department of Early Learning and Title I by assisting with the movement of materials, including delivering food and supplies to families in need. The driver operates vans or similar vehicles, adhering strictly to safety and transportation regulations.

The Specialized Driver is expected to perform vehicle inspections before and after trips to ensure safe operation and comfort for students. The position requires attention to detail, such as verifying that no personal items are left in the vehicle and maintaining cleanliness. The driver must comply with all traffic laws, school board policies, and Department of Transportation guidelines to guarantee the safety of passengers. Reporting accidents promptly and assisting with necessary documentation is another important part of the job.

This position is ideal for individuals with a clean driving record, at least three years of driving experience, and the ability to complete required training courses provided by the school district. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not mandatory. Applicants must possess a current, unrestricted Virginia Driver's License and be at least 21 years old. Physical fitness to meet job requirements is mandatory, as verified by a physical examination conducted by Norfolk Public Schools. Suitable candidates will have a passion for supporting youth and the community through reliable transportation services and logistical assistance.

Job Duties

  • Operates a van or similar vehicle to provide safe transportation for students to and from school and other activities
  • Drives van along designated routes
  • picks up and drops off students as scheduled
  • Ensures that the vehicle can be operated safely before driving and conducts pre-trip safety inspection including observing visual defects and checking operating systems such as brakes, horn, lights, and emergency flashers
  • Performs post-trip inspections of the vehicle ensuring all passengers have been dropped off and no personal belongings are left behind
  • Cleans vehicle as needed
  • Follows guidelines from the Department of Transportation on conduct and behavior
  • Ensures the vehicle is available for all scheduled maintenance and inspections
  • Reports any accidents immediately and completes necessary paperwork
  • Obeys all traffic laws and transportation practices as outlined in the Transportation Employee Handbook, School Board Policy, and local ordinances
  • Other related duties as required
