Job Description

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a key agency within the Department of Homeland Security, is responsible for protecting the nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce. TSA plays a critical role in safeguarding airports, aircraft, and passengers by implementing effective security screening procedures and employing a workforce dedicated to upholding national security standards and preventing threats to transportation safety. As a federal agency, TSA offers competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for growth and development within the Department of Homeland Security. This job opportunity is based at Santa Fe Municipal Airport in Santa Fe, NM, with a salary range of $46,605 to $57,461 annually or $22.33 to $27.53 per hour, including an 18.33% locality pay. Qualified female candidates are currently preferred due to mission-related staffing needs, and a sign-on bonus of up to $5,000 is offered for this duty location, paid out in two installments during the first year of service.

The role of a Transportation Security Officer (TSO) is to provide security and protection to travelers, airports, and aircraft by operating screening equipment, conducting thorough searches, managing terminal access, and responding professionally to the public. TSOs serve as the frontline defense in the aviation security sector, using advanced technology to detect dangerous objects in baggage, cargo, and on passengers, preventing their transport onto aircraft. This position requires physical endurance and agility, as officers may need to lift up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and walk significant distances during their shifts. TSOs must perform their duties amidst challenging workplace conditions, including noise, crowd distractions, and stressful encounters with passengers, while maintaining focus and professionalism.

Transportation Security Officers engage in continuous skill development, including applying risk-based security protocols and adhering to all standard operating procedures. Effective communication, critical thinking, and teamwork are essential for this role as TSOs handle a variety of security situations and interact with diverse populations daily. This permanent position entails shift work, including nights, holidays, overtime, and split shifts, requiring flexibility and dedication. TSA emphasizes employee health and safety; thus, TSOs may be required to wear personal protective equipment such as masks, face shields, and gloves.

Candidates for this position must be U.S. citizens or nationals, at least 18 years of age, registered with Selective Service if applicable, and able to pass a structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation. The job offers advancement potential within the federal system and access to extensive training and developmental programs. TSA values inclusivity and opens opportunities to veterans, disabled individuals, and others committed to public service. This role is ideal for those seeking a meaningful career in federal security operations where they can contribute to national safety while enjoying a comprehensive benefits package and career growth prospects.
