Job Description

The City of Fayetteville is a vibrant municipality known for its commitment to public service and community well-being. As a key local government entity, Fayetteville provides a variety of essential services to its residents, including transportation, public safety, and community development. The city's Transit Department plays a crucial role in ensuring accessible and efficient mass transit options that support the mobility needs of all citizens, including seniors, individuals with disabilities, and the general public. With a strong focus on customer service and operational excellence, the City of Fayetteville continues to strive toward enhancing its transit services to better serve the community. The City is currently recruiting for the position of Transit Dispatcher, a vital role within the Transit Department responsible for overseeing and coordinating the daily operations of the city’s transit vehicles and passenger trips.

The Transit Dispatcher position is designed for a highly organized and customer-focused individual who will manage the scheduling and dispatching of buses and para-transit vehicles. This role requires professional communication skills to interact with bus operators, respond to public inquiries, and effectively handle service emergencies. The Transit Dispatcher coordinates routes, monitors vehicle and staff locations via two-way radios and mobile communication devices, and ensures that transportation services run on schedule. Additionally, the position involves administrative duties such as maintaining employee timesheets, preparing work assignments, and assisting with billing and ticket sales.

In this role, the Transit Dispatcher will act as a central communication hub between the Transit Department, drivers, maintenance staff, law enforcement, and the public. The Dispatcher will be responsible for managing service calls, coordinating vehicle breakdown responses, and ensuring public safety during transit operations. The job also requires handling sensitive inquiries, resolving customer complaints, and offering quality customer service, which are essential to maintaining the reputation of the City’s Transit Department.

Employment for this role includes a selection process that spans approximately four to six weeks, involving a panel interview and skills testing that assess customer service skills, proficiency with software such as Outlook, and other related competencies. The successful candidate will be subject to pre-employment background checks, driving history verification, and Department of Transportation (DOT) drug screening to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work within a dynamic public sector environment dedicated to improving urban transportation services. The role is integral to the operational success of the Transit Department and directly impacts the quality of transportation provided to Fayetteville residents. The City values diversity, equal opportunity, and encourages applications from qualified candidates who are enthusiastic about serving the community through excellent transit management and customer service.
