The Parks & Recreation Department in Carlsbad offers a comprehensive range of programs and services including youth and adult sports, instructional classes, camps, aquatics, preschool, teen and senior programs, and special events. The department also maintains over 51 miles of trails accessible year-round, supporting health, recreation, and environmental stewardship within the community.
The Trails Program within the Parks & Recreation Department is dedicated to meeting the leisure and recreational needs of residents while protecting and preserving open space and coastal resources, aligning with the City of Carlsbad General Plan. This program manages a diverse trail system that caters to a wide range of activities from relaxing lagoons walks to challenging hikes through foothills.
The Trails Program Coordinator plays a pivotal role in supporting the city’s trail experiences. This role involves overseeing the city’s Trails Program by coordinating volunteers and maintenance staff to ensure that the trail system remains safe, welcoming, and well-maintained. The Coordinator is responsible for planning and managing volunteer events such as trail workdays and community hikes, facilitating volunteer training, and implementing program improvements. They also create marketing materials, maps, and documentation to support volunteer activities and engage the community.
Additionally, the Trails Program Coordinator assists with trail maintenance projects by training and supervising staff and volunteers, scheduling tasks, and providing hands-on support. The Coordinator responds to inquiries from the public and partner organizations, helping to foster strong community relations. They also participate in trail monitoring assessments to evaluate and enhance trail conditions.
This position requires strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The Trails Program Coordinator works both independently and as part of a team, often performing duties outdoors in varied terrain. Job Requirements
- high school diploma or G.E.D
- some college coursework preferred
- minimum 1 year of experience or training performing duties comparable to a program coordinator preferably supplemented by college-level courses in parks and recreation or related field
- experience working with the public
- experience administering and implementing basic maintenance or improvements preferably in an outdoor setting such as trails
- possession of an appropriate California Driver's License

- ability to work outdoors, including hiking uneven terrain and performing trail maintenance
Job Duties
- Assist with planning, set up, and management of multiple trails volunteer events such as trails workdays, quarterly volunteers' meetings, and community hikes
- provide face-to-face volunteer coordination and suggest program improvements including volunteer training and trail inspection programs
- create marketing plans, maps, and documentation for trails volunteer events
- select equipment and supplies for program activities and prepare routine administrative reports
- assist on trail maintenance projects through training, oversight, scheduling, and hands-on support
- respond to requests and inquiries from the public and partner organizations
- coordinate related projects to meet trails program goals
- assist with trail monitoring program assessments
- recruit, train, and schedule volunteers for the program
- perform related duties as assigned
