Northrop Grumman is a global aerospace and defense technology company that has played a pivotal role in many groundbreaking technological advancements throughout history. Known for its pioneering spirit and inventive culture, Northrop Grumman has contributed to landmark achievements such as the first flight across the Atlantic, stealth bomber technology, and the lunar landing. The company thrives on intellectual curiosity, cognitive diversity, and values employees who bring their whole selves to work. With a commitment to innovation and excellence, Northrop Grumman employees are empowered to make an impact not only today but for generations to come. The company fosters a collaborative work environment where bold ideas and courage are highly regarded, enabling teams to push the boundaries of what is possible in aerospace and defense systems.
Within Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems (NGAS), located in Palmdale, CA, there is an exciting opportunity for a Tool Engineer or Principal Tool Engineer to join the Armament Business unit. This role focuses on designing and overseeing the build of complex tools and assemblies critical to manufacturing and production processes. The selected candidate will apply their expertise in tool design, using advanced CAD software such as NX, Mastercam, and Solidworks, to create detailed drawings and designs that adhere to industry and corporate drafting standards. A deep knowledge of mechanics, materials science, and machine shop practices is essential for success in this role.
The Tool Engineer will be responsible for planning and designing mechanisms, special machine tools, dies, molds, gauges, cutting tools, and fixtures, adapting standard equipment for specialized purposes, and ensuring ergonomic and safety standards are met, particularly related to pneumatics and hydraulics. This role requires an individual who can work independently with minimal guidance, solve complex problems creatively, and collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, and management throughout the design and build processes. The position demands strong time management, attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to thrive under pressure and manage ambiguity.
The role offers a dynamic and challenging work environment with a schedule that primarily runs Monday through Thursday from 3:00 PM to 1:30 AM, with occasional Fridays and overtime as required. Candidates should be prepared for considerable time standing and walking, up to 50% of the work time. The job may be filled as either a Tool Engineer or a Principal Tool Engineer depending on the applicant’s qualifications. Salary ranges for the Tool Engineer level start from $83,400 to $125,200 annually, while the Principal Tool Engineer level ranges from $103,600 to $155,400 annually. Compensation factors include the scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate experience, education, skills, and current market conditions.
Northrop Grumman provides competitive benefits such as health insurance, life and disability insurance, a savings plan, company-paid holidays, and paid time off for vacation and personal business. Employees may also be eligible for overtime pay, shift differentials, discretionary bonuses, and long-term incentives, especially those in Vice President or Director level roles. The company is committed to equal employment opportunity, fostering an inclusive workplace free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, and other protected classes. U.S. citizenship is required for positions with government clearance due to the sensitive nature of the work.
