The role of Tool Designer at Baker Hughes is a dynamic and highly impactful position centered on creating and enhancing production tooling, fixtures, gauges, and automation support equipment. This role is essential for ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality manufacturing processes, bridging the gap between innovative design and practical production needs. As a Tool Designer, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Manufacturing Engineering, Automation specialists, Tool Makers, CNC Machinists, and Production personnel. Your work will support new product introductions, improve automation capabilities, and drive continuous improvement projects aimed at increasing productivity, reducing costs, and enhancing safety and quality standards.

As a Tool Designer, you will leverage 3D CAD software, specifically SolidWorks, to design and develop detailed tooling systems that meet demanding manufacturing requirements. You will be responsible for preparing comprehensive engineering documentation, including assemblies and bills of materials, essential for efficient production execution. Your involvement in New Product Introduction (NPI) programs will be crucial, delivering tooling solutions aligned with project timelines and business objectives. Partnering with tool makers and machinists, you will ensure that designs are not only innovative but also manufacturable and cost-effective.

The position encourages proactive engagement in automation initiatives, where you will create specialized fixtures and end-of-arm tooling that enhance robotic and automated manufacturing processes. Continuous improvement is a core component of your responsibilities, focusing on increasing workplace safety, optimizing quality, boosting productivity, and lowering operational costs. Job Requirements

  • Have an associate degree in Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field
  • have experience designing tooling, fixtures, manufacturing equipment, or automation systems
  • have proficiency with CAD software, specifically SolidWorks
  • have a strong understanding of machining, fabrication, GD&T, and manufacturing processes
  • have excellent problem-solving and communication skills

Job Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field
  • experience designing tooling, fixtures, manufacturing equipment, or automation systems
  • proficiency with CAD software, specifically SolidWorks
  • strong understanding of machining, fabrication, GD&T, and manufacturing processes

  • experience supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) programs preferred
  • familiarity with automation, robotics, and CNC machines preferred
  • knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies preferred

Job Duties

  • Designing production tooling, fixtures, work holding devices, and gauges using 3D CAD software
  • creating detailed drawings, assemblies, bills of materials (BOMs), and engineering documentation
  • supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) programs by delivering tooling solutions that meet project schedules and business objectives
  • collaborating with Tool Makers and CNC Machinists to ensure tooling designs are manufacturable and cost effective
  • supporting automation initiatives through fixture design and end-of-arm tooling development
  • driving continuous improvement projects focused on safety, quality, productivity, and cost reduction
  • troubleshooting tooling issues and implementing design improvements to improve manufacturing performance
  • supporting cross-functional teams to ensure tooling solutions meet manufacturing and operational requirements
