The Operations Manager position is a full-time role based at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa, a premier location known for hosting a wide variety of events, including concerts, conventions, trade shows, and community gatherings. This critical role focuses on managing all operational aspects of the Iowa Events Center’s arena and convention spaces. The Operations Manager provides leadership and direct supervision over all full-time and part-time hourly employees within the Operations Department, particularly focusing on housekeeping, room setups, show care, and facility conversions.

The position carries an annual salary range of $44,000 to $47,000 and includes a comprehensive benefits package that features health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) savings plan with matching contributions, and generous paid time off including vacation days, sick leave, and 11 holidays. As an Operations Manager, the individual will take ownership of planning, coordinating, and reviewing work plans in facility operations, ensuring optimal preparation and smooth execution of events. This includes forecasting staffing and equipment needs, communicating complex event requirements to management and staff, and maintaining a safe and compliant work environment under OSHA and other regulations.

Key responsibilities extend to managing labor costs, overseeing changeover and housekeeping crews, hiring, training, and mentoring employees, as well as enforcing company policies and union agreements. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of relevant operations or facility experience
  • Proficient in Windows and Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong communication and leadership ability
  • Knowledge of OSHA and safety regulations
  • Forklift certification or ability to acquire within 90 days
  • Ability to work flexible, event-driven hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under high pressure
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor staff
  • Self-motivated and organized
  • Availability for consistent on-site presence and excellent attendance
  • Ability to comply with union agreements and maintain positive labor relations

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree in facility management, event management, or related field preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience in operations or facility management within arenas, convention centers, or similar public facilities
  • Proficient computer skills, including Windows platform with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet-based programs
  • Ability to communicate professionally and clearly in-person and in writing
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to lead large teams in fast-paced environments
  • Knowledge of OSHA and local, state, and federal safety standards
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Willingness to work event-driven schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays

Job Duties

  • Manage planning, coordinating, and reviewing work plans for facility operations
  • Review, interpret, and communicate complex event documents to forecast staffing and equipment needs
  • Coordinate and communicate department schedules to ensure proper facility coverage while monitoring labor costs
  • Oversee and support changeover and housekeeping crews
  • Maintain a safe work environment compliant with company and OSHA regulations
  • Report unsafe conditions, injuries, and employee concerns to management
  • Represent the company with temporary agencies, contractors, and vendors professionally
  • Communicate with staffing agencies on scheduling and monitor on-site labor
  • Interview, hire, and onboard part-time building attendants
  • Coach, evaluate, and mentor employees to correct deficiencies and manage discipline
  • Partner with HR and Operations leaders as necessary
  • Manage employee suspensions and terminations
  • Administer training programs for Operations employees and temporary workers
  • Comply with and supervise employees under Collective Bargaining Agreements
  • Maintain positive relations with union representatives
  • Coordinate and lead staff training and safety programs
  • Monitor and maintain departmental equipment, reporting repair needs
  • Ensure staff works safely, respecting approved restrictions and accommodations
  • Participate in budget development and monitor expenditures
  • Collaborate with Event Managers, Food Services, A/V, IT, and Engineering departments
  • Maintain superior interpersonal relations with vendors, contractors, employees, and management
  • Work on-site maintaining excellent attendance and contributing to a safe work environment
