The role of Operations Manager at the Iowa Events Center is a full-time position responsible for overseeing the operational functions of both arena and convention spaces. This pivotal role entails managing all facets of facility operations including housekeeping, room setups, show care, and the conversion of event spaces. The Operations Manager supervises both full-time and part-time hourly employees, ensuring that all teams work harmoniously to meet the high standards of venue presentation and event readiness. Reporting directly to senior management, this individual is tasked with coordinating labor schedules and managing operational budgets to optimize efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The Operations Manager plays a critical role in maintaining safety compliance, adhering to local, state, federal, and OSHA regulations, and fostering a healthy work environment. They work closely with cross-functional teams including Food Services, Audio/Visual, IT, and Engineering to coordinate event logistics, optimize resource allocation, and address operational challenges. The role demands strong leadership capabilities to mentor, coach, and evaluate staff performance, manage disciplinary actions, and collaborate with human resources and union representatives as necessary. This includes making hiring decisions for part-time staff, overseeing training programs, and managing temporary labor agencies.

Salary for this position ranges from $44,000 to $47,000 annually, reflecting the level of responsibility and expertise required. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3-5 years experience in operations or facility management
  • Knowledge of OSHA and local, state, federal safety standards
  • Ability to lead large teams under pressure
  • Proficient computer skills in Windows environment
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain within 90 days
  • Ability to work event-driven schedules including nights, weekends, holidays
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Excellent organizational skills

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor's degree in facility management, event management, or related field preferred but experience considered
  • 3-5 years experience in operations or facility management within arenas, convention centers or similar venues
  • Proficient with Windows and Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Ability to communicate effectively via phone, email, and text
  • Strong leadership skills managing large teams in fast-paced environments
  • Knowledge of OSHA and safety regulations
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain within 90 days
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work flexible event-driven schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently and collaboratively

Job Duties

  • Manage planning, coordinating, and reviewing work plans for facility operations
  • Review, interpret, and communicate complex event documents to forecast staffing and equipment needs
  • Coordinate and communicate department schedules to ensure proper facility coverage and monitor labor costs
  • Oversee and support changeover and housekeeping crews
  • Maintain a safe work environment in compliance with regulations
  • Report unsafe conditions, injuries, or employee concerns to management
  • Represent the company professionally with temporary agencies, contractors, and vendors
  • Communicate with temporary staffing agencies and monitor on-site labor
  • Interview, hire, and onboard part-time Building Attendants
  • Coach, evaluate, and mentor employees
  • manage discipline and termination processes
  • Collaborate with HR and Operations leadership
  • Manage DNR situations with temporary staff
  • Provide and oversee training programs for employees and temporary workers
  • Ensure compliance with Collective Bargaining Agreements and maintain positive relations with Union representatives
  • Lead staff training and safety programs
  • Maintain departmental equipment and coordinate repairs
  • Monitor staff safety and accommodations
  • Participate in budget development and administration
  • Coordinate event logistics with other departments
  • Maintain positive interpersonal relations with all personnel
  • Work on-site with excellent attendance and contribute to a safe environment
