Located at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa, Oak View Group is currently seeking a dedicated and skilled Operations Manager to oversee the operational management of the facility. This full-time position comes with an annual salary ranging between $44,000 and $47,000 and includes benefits such as health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) savings plan with matching contributions, and paid time off inclusive of vacation days, sick days, and 11 holidays.

The Operations Manager role is pivotal to ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of the Iowa Events Center's arena and convention spaces. Serving as the leader of the Operations Department, this position requires managing both full-time and part-time hourly employees. Key areas of oversight include housekeeping, room setups, show care, and changeover conversions. The manager will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and reviewing work plans essential to maintaining operational excellence during events of varying scale and complexity.

In addition to direct supervision, the Operations Manager must effectively communicate with team members, temporary staffing agencies, contractors, and vendors to coordinate labor needs and maintain optimal coverage. Ensuring compliance with safety regulations at the company, local, state, federal, and OSHA levels is critical to maintaining a safe working environment for all employees and contractors. The successful candidate must be adept at managing staffing budgets, monitoring expenditures, and implementing adjustments to align with organizational goals.

A comprehensive understanding of union and collective bargaining agreements is essential, as is maintaining professional and positive relations with union representatives. Recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, coaching, mentoring, and evaluating staff fall under the manager's purview, along with disciplinary actions when necessary. The role demands strong leadership skills to inspire and support a diverse team working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Moreover, the Operations Manager will collaborate closely with other departments such as event management, food services, audio/visual, information technology, and engineering to coordinate seamless event production. The role requires excellent organizational skills, superior interpersonal communication, and a professional demeanor both in-person and in writing. The candidate must be able to adapt to an event-driven schedule that includes working nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts.

Job Requirements

  • 3-5 years experience in operations or facility management

Job Qualifications

  • bachelor’s degree in facility management, event management, or related field
  • 3-5 years experience in operations or facility role in arena, convention center, or public facility
  • knowledge of setup, housekeeping, and event coordination
  • proficient computer skills in Windows
  • experience with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, internet programs, basic typing preferred
  • ability to be available via company cell phone, email, text
  • effective leadership in fast-paced environments
  • knowledge of OSHA and safety standards
  • forklift certification or ability to acquire within 90 days

Job Duties

  • Manage planning, coordinating, and review of work plans for facility operations
  • review, interpret and communicate complex event documents to forecast staffing and equipment needs
  • coordinate and communicate department schedule ensuring proper facility coverage and labor cost monitoring
  • oversee and monitor changeover and housekeeping crews and provide support
  • maintain a healthy and safe work environment per company, local, state, federal, and OSHA regulations
  • report unsafe conditions, injuries, employee concerns, and escalated situations to management
  • represent company professionally with temporary agencies, contractors, and vendors
  • communicate with temporary agencies on staffing and monitor on-site labor
  • interview, hire, and onboard part-time Building Attendants
  • coach, evaluate, and mentor employees, manage discipline procedures
  • partner with Operations leaders and HR
  • suspend, recommend termination, and deliver termination as required
  • manage Do Not Return situations with temporary staff
  • provide and oversee training for Operations employees and temporary workers
  • ensure compliance and supervise within Collective Bargaining Agreement parameters
  • maintain positive relations with Union representatives
  • coordinate and lead staff training and safety programs
  • maintain departmental equipment and report repair needs
  • ensure staff works safely and monitor restrictions
  • participate in Operations budget development and administration
  • collaborate with Event Managers and other departments
  • maintain superior relations with vendors, contractors, employees, management, and temporary employees
  • maintain excellent attendance and contribute to a safe work environment
