The Lexington Opera House, located in the heart of downtown Lexington, Kentucky, is a historic and beloved performing arts venue managed under the Oak View Group’s umbrella. Known for its architectural grandeur and eclectic programming, the Opera House hosts a wide range of performances including theater productions, concerts, and community events. The part-time House Manager role is a pivotal position within the Lexington Opera House, serving as a key component of the venue’s public face. This position primarily involves overseeing the lobby, auditorium, and audience seating areas during event performances to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all patrons. The House Manager is responsible not only for operational logistics but also for fostering a welcoming environment where audience engagement and safety are top priorities. This includes managing front-of-house volunteers and staff, handling patron inquiries and concerns, and maintaining the overall readiness and security of the venue before, during, and after shows.
This role pays an hourly rate of $18.00 and offers part-time benefits including a 401(k) savings plan with matching contributions. The House Manager plays a crucial role in coordinating volunteer recruitment, scheduling, and training, ensuring all team members are fully prepared to deliver exceptional service. They conduct pre-show briefings with volunteers to communicate important information such as attendance expectations, seating arrangements, emergency protocols, event policies, and guest services. This position requires a professional appearance and demeanor at all times, reflecting the high standards of the Lexington Opera House.
Success in this role means working collaboratively with theatre staff, including the Box Office Manager, Technical Coordinator, and Event Coordinator, to facilitate the smooth production of shows and uphold the theatre’s reputation for excellence. The House Manager’s leadership directly enhances the patron experience by creating an organized, safe, and welcoming space where the arts can be enjoyed fully. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals with a background in performing arts management, customer service, and volunteer coordination who are passionate about contributing to the cultural vitality of Lexington and supporting a historic community institution. Job Requirements

- 3-5+ years of relevant work experience
- 2+ years of supervisory experience
- ability to recruit and train volunteers

Job Qualifications
- 3-5+ years of work experience in the performing arts, arts administration and/or theater management, or a related field
- 2+ years of supervisory experience
- high school diploma or GED required
- previous experience recruiting volunteers a plus
- previous experience training staff preferred
Job Duties
- Recruiting or supervising the recruiting of all volunteers
- coordinating building opening times on show nights
- orienting and sharing in the training of volunteers
- explaining to volunteers how tickets are to be scanned or processed for entry to shows
- checking the auditorium, lobbies, restrooms, and any other public space before and after the audience is permitted to enter the theatre to assure the house is in a ready state
- turning restroom lights on and off in the lobbies and public areas and assuring that the house is secured by locking down the lobbies after a show
- scheduling and supervising volunteer assignments within the theatre, ensuring that ushers and volunteers have a clear understanding of the seating scheme and of emergency sheltering in place or egress as needed
- conducting briefings with the volunteers before each show to inform them about expected attendance, who the designated floor captains are, the running time of the show, intermission, the late seating policy, the photo policy, planned meet-and-greet schedules, concessions, merchandise, programs or handouts, accessible seating or expected service animals, and general housekeeping information
- providing an impeccable appearance at all times and ensuring all volunteers are provided with an appearance befitting the high standard of the theatre
- working closely with the theatre staff, particularly the box office manager, theatre technical coordinator, and event coordinator, to ensure a smooth and efficient production of each show and to represent the company in a professional manner
