Job Description

Heinz Chapel, located on the University of Pittsburgh campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a historic and iconic building that has been a cherished venue for weddings and special events for decades. This beautiful chapel, known for its unique architecture and serene ambiance, serves as a premier event location that welcomes individuals of all faiths. With a rich history and a commitment to providing exceptional experiences, Heinz Chapel is renowned for hosting ceremonies that are both memorable and meaningful for couples and their guests. The chapel's reputation as a respectful, inclusive, and versatile venue makes it a favored choice for a variety of events beyond weddings, including memorial services and concerts, offering a unique blend of tradition and functionality in the heart of Pittsburgh. Heinz Chapel operates under a philosophy that honors the personal and emotional significance of each event it hosts, requiring staff to manage all occasions with sensitivity and professionalism while adhering to established guidelines to ensure an excellent guest experience.

The role of the Temporary Wedding and Events Coordinator at Heinz Chapel is a part-time, temporary position designed for individuals who thrive in event coordination and customer service. This role involves acting as the primary liaison between the chapel, the wedding couples, their guests, and various event vendors such as photographers, videographers, and officiants. The coordinator is responsible for the comprehensive planning oversight that encompasses pre-event communications, rehearsal coordination alongside officiants, and execution during ceremonies to guarantee that events proceed smoothly and on schedule. A key responsibility includes serving as the building steward, managing access with keys and badges, securing the chapel before and after events, and ensuring the venue is maintained to the highest standards.

Additionally, this position demands a working knowledge of the chapel’s technical systems including audio, lighting, and the recorded organ system to support event logistics effectively. The successful candidate will work primarily on weekends and some evenings, with shifts typically on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and occasional Sundays, attending approximately two weekends each month. The position starts with an hourly wage of $20.00 and offers a potential increase to $21.50 after successful completion of training within the first three months. The role requires physical activity including moving throughout the building and grounds during events, with the ability to lift up to 30 pounds, making physical stamina and mobility essential qualities.

Working at Heinz Chapel provides a unique opportunity to be part of a longstanding tradition within the University of Pittsburgh community, supporting the creation of unforgettable moments for event participants. The coordinator must demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and a service-oriented attitude, handling complex or sensitive situations with grace and professionalism. The role offers potential for additional event work, including concerts, expanding responsibilities beyond weddings. The University of Pittsburgh is committed to equal employment opportunities and welcomes candidates from diverse backgrounds, including disability and veteran status. This opportunity is ideal for individuals with a background in customer service or event planning who enjoy dynamic, people-centered work in a prestigious and historic setting.
