The Public Defender's Office operates with a high level of professionalism and commitment to public service, serving a diverse population with differing needs and legal challenges. As a governmental agency, the office functions within a complex judicial environment, often dealing with high-stress situations involving clients who may be in crisis. The Clerk/Receptionist - Temporary Extra Help position at the Whatcom County Public Defender's Office is a dynamic and integral role within the organization. This position involves providing excellent clerical and reception support to the office in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. The individual in this role is responsible for being the primary point of contact for clients, the public, court personnel, and other external agency staff. This requires excellent interpersonal skills, especially given the diverse nature of visitors—including offenders and people potentially under stress or the influence of substances. The role demands a sharp attention to detail to ensure accuracy in data recording and retrieval.

This temporary extra help position offers variable working hours within Monday through Friday, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, providing flexibility in the weekly schedule. The pay rate is competitive at $20.76 per hour, reflecting the responsibility and skill required for the position. Additionally, the job requires performing essential court-related runs twice daily, involving the collection, date-stamping, and timely delivery of legal and administrative documents throughout the courthouse complex and within the department. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to thrive in a busy, sometimes distracting environment while maintaining professionalism and discretion. A background check is mandatory to meet county criteria for criminal justice roles, and passing job-related tests is also required.
