Job Description
Brooklyn Center Community School (BCCS) District is an esteemed educational institution dedicated to fostering a justice-centered school community that nurtures and supports the unique abilities and talents of every student. As a public school district located in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, BCCS is committed to creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment that reflects the rich diversity of its community. The district operates a full-service school model where students, families, and staff collaborate to address educational, health, and social needs in a holistic manner. Rooted deeply in values of passion, pride, perseverance, and justice, BCCS actively works to dismantle oppressive systems and fosters an environment where every learner is valued and empowered to succeed.
The district is currently seeking motivated and dedicated individuals to join its Custodial and Maintenance team as a Temporary Full-Time Custodian for the summer months. This position plays a critical role supporting the Operations Department by ensuring the district's elementary school environments are well-maintained and ready for the academic year. The Temporary Custodian undertakes a variety of manual and maintenance tasks such as assisting with the annual summer cleaning program — including intensive floor care like stripping, scrubbing, waxing, and refinishing — as well as cleaning and sanitizing classrooms, offices, restrooms, and hallways in strict accordance with the district’s health and safety standards.
This role also includes supporting grounds maintenance activities, such as mowing, trimming, edging, weeding, mulching, and watering to maintain the exterior school environment conducive to learning. The custodian assists with indoor and outdoor logistical tasks like building moves, furniture relocation, equipment transportation, and setup or teardown for district events. Working closely with maintenance and grounds staff, the custodian operates various custodial and grounds equipment safely and responsibly following all district protocols and OSHA regulations.
This temporary, full-time position offers competitive hourly pay starting at $19.50 up to $24.70 depending on experience and union classification, with work hours from Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This role demands reliability and prompt attendance to ensure the physical readiness of school facilities for student learning and community engagement. The district prides itself on providing a supportive workplace culture and comprehensive benefits package, emphasizing employee wellness and work-life balance.
Applicants joining the BCCS team will be part of a progressive organization that values diverse voices and perspectives. BCCS nurtures a culture of respect, collaboration, and social justice. The district’s motto to stand 'front and center' affirms their commitment to be visible and active agents of change within education and the broader community. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to an innovative, equity-focused educational environment that prioritizes health and safety, supports staff development, and builds a strong foundation for student success.
