The Field Service Technician - Cryogenic role based in Kalamazoo, MI focuses on supporting the installation, care, and maintenance of on-site nitrogen generation plants and bulk medical or industrial gas systems. This position is pivotal in ensuring these systems operate safely and efficiently, adhering strictly to federal, state, provincial, and local codes, as well as Airgas policies. The technician collaborates on installing nitrogen on-site generation equipment and cryogenic bulk installations at both Airgas facilities and customer sites. Responsibilities also include restoring and optimizing pressure reduction equipment, evaluating and improving electrical systems related to nitrogen generation, and installing piping systems as per company standard operating procedures.

This role involves conducting site surveys to ensure regulatory compliance, maintaining the security of fencing to prevent tampering or unauthorized access, and performing periodic preventive maintenance to ensure long-term equipment reliability. Annual evaluations of bulk installation sites are conducted to assess their condition and ensure correct operation. A strong focus on safety policies and procedures is critical, as is maintaining adequate stock of recommended parts for supporting typical installations within the assigned customer base. The technician must also be flexible and willing to support other team areas as needed.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • must have or be able to obtain Certified Brazer Certificate within 30 days of employment
  • must have a valid driver’s license
  • able to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day
  • ability to perform regulator repairs and repair piping or liquid leaks is a plus
  • ability to work independently and under pressure to meet deadlines

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Brazer Certificate obtained or able to obtain within 30 days of employment
  • valid driver’s license
  • HVAC or refrigeration certification or ASSE Medical Gas Credentials a plus
  • minimum two years industrial field service experience preferably in gas generation systems
  • prior electrical experience a plus
  • detailed understanding of NFPA 99 and NFPA 55
  • knowledge of cryogenic and high pressure gases and associated products and systems
  • hands-on experience with cryogenic equipment, pressure piping, compressors
  • working knowledge of welding and brazing processes
  • ability to read blueprints, manufacturer and architectural drawings
  • ability to read and interpret safety documents and manuals
  • proficiency in mathematical calculations
  • basic Microsoft Office skills
  • strong communication skills
  • ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
  • good judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills
  • self-motivated, enthusiastic, positive attitude, and team player

Job Duties

  • Collaborates on the installation and care of nitrogen on-site generation equipment
  • supports cryogenic bulk installations at Airgas facilities and customer sites
  • restores and optimizes pressure reduction equipment associated with bulk delivery systems
  • evaluates and performs general improvements to electrical systems including motor controls, relays, and alarm systems
  • coordinates placement of decals and warning signs for hazard identification
  • performs installation of piping systems following company SOPs
  • conducts site surveys to ensure compliance with all regulatory codes
  • maintains security fencing to protect installations
  • performs periodic preventative maintenance on nitrogen generation equipment
  • conducts annual evaluations of bulk installation sites
  • champions safety policies and procedures
  • maintains stock of recommended parts for customer installations
  • supports team in other areas as needed
