Job Description
Kaldi's Coffee is a respected café company operating within the Washington University Medical Campus in St. Louis, Missouri. These unique café locations are strategically situated inside medical facilities, serving a professional clientele that includes physicians, nurses, researchers, and staff. Unlike traditional coffee shops, these venues operate in a fast-paced, healthcare-adjacent environment that demands high standards of efficiency, accuracy, and professionalism. Kaldi's Coffee embraces a culture of inclusivity and growth, providing opportunities for their employees to advance internally, with many leads and managers having started as floor staff. The company values reliability, clear communication, and a serious approach to work, especially given the demanding nature of the healthcare setting they serve.
This role involves working Monday through Friday with no evening or weekend shifts, creating a consistent and predictable work schedule desirable for many professionals. The positions available at these WashU Medical Campus locations require a minimum commitment of three to five shifts per week, ensuring the team can meet the operational demands of these critical service points. The base pay starts at $12 per hour, supplemented by a shared tip pool that guarantees a combined hourly rate of $17. Employees in this role enjoy half-price food and drink benefits both on and off shift, as well as holiday pay at 1.5 times the regular rate.
The role itself is multifaceted, requiring team members to work both front- and back-of-house. Responsibilities include taking orders, preparing food and beverages, and maintaining cleanliness and operational standards at all times. While prior café experience is not necessary—as on-the-job training is provided—candidates must be comfortable working in a professional, healthcare-adjacent setting and demonstrate punctuality and clear communication. Experience in hospital food service, university dining, or similar institutional environments can provide a valuable background for prospective candidates, as the fast pace and high expectations mirror those sectors.
Full-time employees, defined as those working 30 or more hours per week, are eligible for comprehensive benefit packages including health, dental, and vision insurance. Additional benefits for full-time staff include gym reimbursement, paid time off accrued based on length of service, and 401(k) retirement plan eligibility after one year of working 20 or more hours per week on average. Kaldi's Coffee also supports employees through the Kaldi's Cares Fund, which offers emergency assistance in cases of unexpected hardship, reflecting the company's commitment to fostering a supportive work environment.
Positions are available across several distinguished campus locations including the Neuroscience Research Building, Siteman Cancer Center, and MCC. Whether applying for full-time or part-time work, candidates should be prepared for a dynamic role that combines customer service with food preparation in a setting where professionalism and efficiency are paramount.
