The Restaurant Shift Leader position at McAlister's Deli is a critical role in ensuring the smooth daily operations of the restaurant. Reporting directly to the General Manager or Assistant Manager, the Shift Leader is responsible for overseeing both front-of-house and back-of-house activities during assigned shifts. This non-exempt position requires an individual who can effectively supervise team members, manage labor costs, and enforce company policies while maintaining the restaurant’s standards for service and product quality. The Shift Leader acts as the key point of contact in the absence of upper management, handling operational challenges, guest concerns, and team dynamics with professionalism and care.
This role involves a variety of responsibilities including scheduling staff to optimize labor costs, ensuring speedy and quality service to guests, maintaining cleanliness and safety standards, and supporting the ongoing training and development of team members. Physical stamina and the capacity to perform various physical tasks are also vital, given the demanding nature of the work environment.
The ideal candidate will have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, complemented by experience in the food service industry—prior supervisory experience is a plus but not mandatory. Job Requirements
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high energy, and physically demanding environment
- Must be able to stand for 90% of working time
- Must be able to sit for 10% of working time
- Must use all sensory capabilities including vision, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching, and speaking
- Must use physical capabilities such as walking, bending, kneeling, handling, hand flexibility, reaching, squatting, crawling, lifting, climbing, and stooping
- Must be able to carry loads greater than 25 pounds and transport up to 50 pounds regularly
- Must be able to communicate clearly with guests and team members primarily in English
- Must hear with 100% accuracy with correction
- Must see to 20/20 vision with correction
- Must have reliable transportation
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 1 year experience in the food service industry
- Experience in a fast-paced environment
- Retail experience
- Supervisory experience is a plus but not required
Job Duties
- Provide supervision during assigned shifts
- Provide team members and guests with a positive experience and atmosphere
- Manage front-of-house and back-of-house shift responsibilities including staff scheduling to minimize overtime and control labor costs
- Monitor speed of service to ensure positive guest experience
- Handle guest comments and complaints
- Supervise daily shifts to maintain McAlister's standards for product quality and cleanliness
- Assist in ongoing training of new and existing team members
- Enforce uniform policy and standards
- Ensure proper cash handling procedures
- Open and close the restaurant in absence of upper management
- Perform line checks as necessary
- Execute all other duties as assigned by management
