The role of Team Captain of Off Field Operations is a leadership position within DICK'S Sporting Goods retail stores. This role centers around ensuring operational excellence by managing inventory, fulfillment, and stockroom execution efficiently. Team Captains are expected to lead by example, coach teammates, and uphold company standards to support overall store performance. Leadership in this role involves contributing to business priority plans, supporting merchandising standards, staffing, and hiring, as well as ensuring smooth store operations.
A Team Captain of Off Field Operations is responsible for creating an athlete-ready environment through strategic execution of daily and weekly goals, assigning workloads based on skill, and maintaining operational flow during high traffic periods. This position also entails leading recruitment, onboarding, training, and development of teammates to build and retain a strong, motivated team. Performance management, including conducting reviews and accountability adherence, is a critical component of the role. By fostering a welcoming environment for both teammates and athletes, this position helps shape the store's inclusive culture.
Moreover, the Team Captain of Off Field Operations must ensure compliance with safety policies, loss prevention procedures, and legal guidelines governing retail operation. The role also requires stepping in as the acting Head Coach in the absence of store management, overseeing opening and closing procedures, front end and cash office functions, and overall store supervision. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1-3 years of relevant experience
- Previous retail/customer-facing experience
- Strong leadership and coaching skills
- Ability to plan and execute operational initiatives
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to enforce safety and loss prevention policies
- Willingness to work flexible schedules including opening and closing shifts
- Must adhere to virtual interview requirements including camera on and no AI tools
- Successful completion of background check and ID verification
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1-3 years of experience
- Previous retail/customer-facing experience required
- Previous people leadership experience preferred
Job Duties
- Deliver outstanding athlete experiences by anticipating athlete needs and providing clear, accurate, and knowledgeable information about products and assortment
- Uphold company merchandising and presentation standards by following established floor sets, signage requirements, price changes, inventory presentation, replenishment standards, etc
- Promote and lead company programs (i.e., customer loyalty program participation, warranty sales, private label credit card enrollment, etc)
- Contribute to the development of 30-60-90 day plans to support business priorities for assigned departments
- Help establish and execute working plans related to operational initiatives, staffing, hiring needs, operational and merchandising sets in accordance with budgets and financial goals
- Perform general store oversight including opening and closing procedures, Front End and Cash Office functions, teammate supervision when acting as Head Coach
- Communicate departmental goals and plans to direct reports and assign workload based on skill levels to maximize efficiencies
- Build and lead a strong team delivering positive athlete experiences through sourcing, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and retaining teammates
- Provide coaching, feedback, development, recognition, and motivation
- Manage performance including reviews, promotional recommendations, and accountability
- Adhere to and enforce established safety policies, loss prevention procedures, and laws/guidelines of governing entities
- Hold teammates accountable for compliance with policies and procedures
