Cornerstone University is a private Christian university committed to academic excellence and the spiritual growth of its students. Founded on a Christ-centered mission and Biblical confession, the university provides a vibrant community where faith and learning are integrated to create a transformative educational experience. Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Cornerstone University serves a diverse student body and offers a range of programs designed to equip students for purposeful lives and impactful careers. The university emphasizes a supportive atmosphere in which faculty, staff, and students collaborate closely to nurture growth, leadership, and service aligned with foundational Christian values.
The Food Service Department at Cornerstone University plays a critical role in supporting the campus community by delivering nutritious and thoughtfully prepared meals. The department operates within the Corum Student Union, a central hub for dining and social activities on campus. The team is dedicated to maintaining high standards of food quality, safety, and employee development, all while fostering an environment that reflects the university's Christian ethos.
The Swing Cook position is a vital member of the Food Service team, responsible for preparing quality meals and supervising student workers in the kitchen. This full-time role, working 40 hours across 9 months, primarily covers a mid-shift schedule but requires flexibility to open and close the kitchen as necessary, including some weekend hours. The Swing Cook is cross-trained to operate effectively throughout the food service area and is instrumental in upholding the department's commitment to excellence.
Key responsibilities include preparing meals in accordance with established recipes, utilizing computer databases to access recipe details, and assisting with various food preparation duties. The Swing Cook is also responsible for learning and properly using all kitchen equipment, ensuring proper food safety protocols, and verifying that all food matches allergen labeling displayed front-of-house. Supervisory duties involve training, developing, and overseeing student kitchen employees, providing feedback on recipe performance, and maintaining food logs and production notes.
A successful candidate will demonstrate strong time management and organizational skills, an ability to handle pressure and multi-task, and a commitment to maintaining standards of quality and safety. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds regularly. Cornerstone University values employees who serve as Christian leaders and mentors, engaging with students through a gospel-centered lifestyle and ministry. This role offers the opportunity to work within a faith-based academic environment while gaining valuable culinary and supervisory experience.
