Job Description

Cornerstone University, located in Grand Rapids, MI, is a Christ-centered academic institution committed to integrating faith and learning. With a strong mission grounded in biblical confession, Cornerstone seeks to cultivate leaders who are not only skilled in their professions but also grounded in Christian values. The university offers a variety of services to its campus community, including a Food Service department tasked with providing quality meals to students and staff. This role is part of the Food Services department, specifically stationed at the Corum Student Union in Grand Rapids. The position is full-time, requiring 40 hours over 9 months and compensated hourly. The Swing Cook plays a vital role within this dynamic department, balancing culinary skills with supervisory responsibilities.

The Swing Cook position at Cornerstone University demands versatility and dedication. This role requires preparing high-quality meals while adhering to strict food safety and quality standards. A significant part of the job is supervising student kitchen workers, providing leadership and training to ensure efficient operation of the kitchen. Flexibility is essential as the Swing Cook must be prepared to work mid-shifts predominantly but may also need to open or close the kitchen, necessitating a readiness to manage varied schedules including some weekend hours. Cross-training across various food service tasks is expected to maintain smooth operations and enhance teamwork. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong time management skills, responsibility, and the ability to handle pressure and multitask effectively.

This role is deeply integrated with the university's Christian mission. Employees are expected to live a gospel-centered lifestyle and serve as Christian leaders and mentors. This feature differentiates Cornerstone’s work environment, emphasizing the importance of faith in daily professional activities. The university's doctrinal adherence, known as the Cornerstone Confession, underpins all aspects of campus life and work, including this Food Service role. This position offers not just a job but an opportunity to mentor students and support them in a variety of campus activities from a faith-based perspective.

Responsibilities also include maintaining proper documentation such as food logs and production notes, ensuring accurate allergen labeling is followed, and regularly providing feedback on menu items based on student preferences. The candidate should be proficient with kitchen equipment and use digital tools for recipe management. Physical demands include the ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds. Cornerstone University values employees who demonstrate an active Christian commitment, support the university’s core values, and are willing to engage with the campus community positively both professionally and spiritually.
