The role of the SWC Assistant at River Springs Middle School is a vital position within the food service team, focusing on the preparation and serving of quality meals to students of Volusia County Schools. This part-time, non-instructional service worker position is classified under 05-Non-Barg/Non-Instructional. The assistant is responsible for a variety of tasks including preparing fruits, vegetables, and meat items, baking breads and desserts, setting up cafeteria lines, and maintaining strict sanitation standards throughout food preparation and service.

Working approximately four hours per day over nine months, the SWC Assistant supports the School Way Cafe's mission to deliver healthy, appealing meals in a safe and efficient manner. Employees in this role are involved in several operational aspects of the kitchen from washing dishes and cleaning kitchen equipment to stocking inventory and using computerized cash registers. The role requires attention to detail, teamwork, positive interpersonal communication, and the ability to work in varying environmental conditions such as high heat or humidity.

Volusia County Schools provides training such as Foundations, an introduction to the School Way Cafe, and requires ServSafe Essentials certification within the first year of employment. The position is suited for candidates who can operate kitchen equipment safely, perform routine cleaning, and maintain accurate records of sanitation and inventory.

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent preferred
  • successful completion of Foundations course and ServSafe Essentials certification within first year of employment
  • possess or agree to acquire a valid Florida driver’s license within thirty days of employment if position is Satellite Delivery Only
  • ability to work harmoniously with students and adults
  • ability to work efficiently and effectively at a fast pace
  • ability to perform basic math skills for recipe preparation and inventory reporting
  • ability to work in high heat/humidity and in cool/cold environments

Job Duties

  • Wash, peel, and prepare fruits and vegetables for salads and cooking
  • clean and prepare meat items
  • prepare coffee, tea, and other beverages
  • make salads, sandwiches, entrées, vegetables, side dishes, and soups as assigned, maintaining proper sanitation records
  • prepare and bake bread, rolls, cookies, cakes, and desserts as assigned, maintaining proper sanitation records
  • set up trays, steam tables, and food carts
  • serve food on cafeteria line, including set up for special luncheons and dinners
  • scrape trays, wash dishes, pots, and pans
  • empty refuse
  • clean kitchen floor area and dining room tables
  • clean stoves, ovens, steam tables, food carts, windows, doors, walls, fans, filters, bathrooms, refrigerators and other equipment
  • help maintain clean storage area and stored food in proper condition
  • maintain equipment in proper and sanitary working condition
  • check in and put away stock items in storeroom, coolers, and freezers, maintaining proper inventory and sanitation records
  • correctly operate kitchen equipment, abiding by safety rules and standards
  • work as part of a team without close supervision
  • operate computerized cash register and complete related bookkeeping tasks as assigned
  • use basic math skills necessary for preparation and adaptation of recipes and reporting systems
  • use effective positive interpersonal communication, maintaining composure under stress
  • work as a member of a team to ensure that standards of performance are maintained, the objectives of the program are achieved, and the goals of the district are met
  • wear designated uniform and appropriate shoes
  • perform various duties by climbing stairs and/or ramps
  • perform other related duties as assigned by the district office, Manager - School Way Cafe or designee
