The role of the Sushi Clerk is an essential position within the Hy-Chi department at Hy-Vee, specializing in the preparation, presentation, and sale of sushi products to customers. This non-exempt position demands a candidate who is customer-focused, friendly, and eager to uphold the standards of food safety and quality while providing a memorable shopping experience. As a Sushi Clerk, the individual will be responsible for efficiently fulfilling customer orders, managing inventory, and ensuring all sushi items are correctly labeled, dated, and stored according to company policies. The role requires a blend of technical skill in sushi preparation, keen attention to detail, and excellent interpersonal communication capabilities to maintain strong customer relationships.

In addition to food preparation and customer service duties, the Sushi Clerk collaborates with store management and team members to maintain product freshness and manage supply needs, including ordering and receiving shipments. Job Requirements

  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • food safety certification
  • six months or more of similar or related experience
  • must be physically able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly
  • must have visual acuity from 20 inches or less to more than 20 feet, depth perception, and field of vision
  • ability to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • must be able to follow detailed written or verbal instructions
  • able to perform basic math (addition and subtraction)

Job Duties

  • provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
  • smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store
  • makes an effort to learn customers' names and to address them by name whenever possible
  • assists customers by escorting them to products, securing out of reach products, loading or unloading heavy items, noting and passing along customer suggestions or requests, and enhancing the shopping experience
  • answers the telephone promptly when called upon and provides friendly, helpful service including taking customer orders
  • takes customer orders at the Chinese Express counter
  • works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
  • reviews orders for the day
  • understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat
  • reviews the status and appearance of the food for freshness
  • ensures that an adequate food supply is ready and on hand and develops or follows a production list
  • anticipates product needs daily
  • prepares, finishes, and replenishes product as necessary
  • pulls product from cooler/freezer for preparation
  • checks in product and puts product away
  • removes trash in a timely manner
  • adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines
  • reports to work when scheduled and on time
